292 crate engine

I was seeking a youtube video for setting timing on a 250 six. One of the video options on right side of screen had StaceyDavidGearZ opening an early 60's 292 crate engine that came from factory. I believe the video is from 2011. It may be a good reference/pictoral for some of you. Enjoy. Oh yea, the video is called "Vintage Hot Rod Straight 6". Obviously, he tricked it out.

Re: 292 crate engine

Its actually not a 292 in the vid. Stacey totally screwed up on it....if you listen closely he first says its a 292 outta 1971..then he says its been sitting on someone's garage since 1965...its simple to explain its not a 292 by the 4 inch side covers and the fuel pump being directly behind the distributor. The engine no doubt is a 250. This vid has been posted in the "Tricked out chevy 6 cylinders" thread. But thanks for posting.

Re: 292 crate engine

Hey TJ. I posted a reply earlier and I must have done something wrong. Not sure if I've got the hang of this forum yet. Guess I should've recognized the engine, I have a 250. I hope some users have benefited from the post.

Re: 292 crate engine

Maybe ten years ago or so, you could still get a 292 from GM. Dunno if or when that stopped.

Thought it was kinda funny that Stacey just happened to have 3 webers on the shelf. Anyway, I like the mods to your engine!
Regarding nos parts, I was informed by a former employee of GM Parts that GM didn't store "bigs" beyond 10 years. As an employee, you can call an offsite department of GM and occasionally find "smalls". Can't imagine engines, trannies, or anything like that still available.

GM itself doesn't reman the L6 anymore...I do know you can get a reman 292 though...Sharps40 can tell you the company name. And the carbs Stacey used were old Holley carbs.

Re: 292 crate engine

TJ. Just for fun, I quickly looked back at a couple of slides on Stacey's video. It does appear to be smaller than a 292 based on side plates and position of motor mount. However, I was wondering if it weren't a 70's engine (as he said) based on the valve cover. It appears it has an opening for a large tube that runs to air cleaner. Probably first of emission requirement unless its a CAL. engine. Also noted that he called the carbs "Carter". Was he wrong on that too?

Sorry..I meant Carter..lol..Holley is Stacey's favorite carb..that's why I thought holley...been a number of months since I looked up the vids. Carter is another name for Edelbrock fyi. That 250 is a mid 70's I'd bet judging by paint and by the valve cover. The headers he showed were for a 216-235-261 L6. 194-230-250-292 all can use the same headers...194-230-250 use the same intake and exhaust while the 292 was slightly bigger.
Edit. Link to vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K95OEKP22k

Actually, Carter was the original manufacturer of the AFB (Aluminum Four Barrel) carb that Edelbrock now makes under license (or something); Carter also made a ton of other carbs for all kinds of applications.
