Help I ordered the wrong headers.

Hey guys I have a 1970 Chevy C10. I had some old headers on the truck but all of the paint had came off. I wanted to get them ceramic coated black but it was going to cost me $230 to get it done. I just ordered a new set from summit for $230. Part number SUM-G9006-9 headers for 350. I got them in and installed them on my truck. They don't fit. On the passenger side the header is really really close to the engine mount. I can get a piece off paper in the gap. On the driver side when I put my spark plugs in one of the plug wires is hitting the header. I got the numbers off of my block and my heads they are BLOCK # 330817 which say it's from 1973-80 and the CID is 400 and HEAD # 333882 which is 70-80and is CID 350-400. So how many cubic inches is my motor. And on the back of the block is K27/74 which I think converts to Nov 27, 1974. I can't figure out why the headers don't fit. When I order another set what should I order them as. I ordered these for a 1970 Chevy C10 Automatic with a 350 5.7

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

Sounds like they fit and by fit I mean they bolted on. SBC dimensions are the same regardless of size.

Other than buying another manufacturer's product or dealing with your clearance issues, your only alternative is to put your old ones on. There's a reason many of us went back to manifolds.

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

Welcome to the wonderful world of headers. One company's idea of "fitting" means thy bolt up, yet you have to pound the snot out of them to change plugs, etc.

If you verify with summit that they didnt send the wrong ones, i would consider this a lear ing experience and spend the money on a quality name brand; Heddman, Hooker, etc.

Not to tell you what you already realize but from now on, hang on to the old parts til you know the new ones fit. Personally i have had several vehicles with crusty headers, but they fit well, so i pulled them and had them coated. I have even bought crusty but good name brand old headers cheap at swap meets and after verifying fit, sent them off to be jet hot coated.

I actually ordered the wrong parts from Summit for my diff. A call to their tech line and they gave me the correct part number, credited my charge card for the original purchase and then billed the replacement, sent it out and contacted UPS for me so they could pick up the part I had. All without argument or charge. They are a class house so, I would try the phone first!

I agree Summit has been great. Sanderson makes a really nice header that works well with our trucks - 2wd auto. I believe the are C11.

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

I would also suggest you get 3/8 flanges and ball socket at the collector or you will be fighting leaks.

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

I am changing mine out also. I put none ceramic headers on and going to ceramic coated. They are for a Jeep 350 and they fit great, no clearance problems. I will sell the old ones, which are new. Only ran them for about 50 miles.

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

I have only had the truck for about six months. Got another question I always thought my truck had a 350 small block in it but when I ran those numbers it's telling me it's a 400 small block 2 bolt. Can anyone confirm that for me?

Yes it is. The 400s are the same outer dimensions so they siamesed the cylinders to enable larger bores. Many SBC blocks are interchangeable, the 400, not so much.

SANDERSONS! Yes. Their long tube Blockhuggers really fit AND you change plugs without beating dents into them. Not to mention the low end torque.

Are your heads straight plugs or angle plugs makes a difference in headers

Ended up just putting my old headers back on after painting them. Really glad how they turned out. Took it out for a drive this afternoon.

Yea here's a recap of what happen. I ended up boxing up the ones I bought from summit and I am going to send them back. As bad as I hated to I had to buy my old ones back. (Hated to ask if I could buy them back after I just sold them to him.) I learned my lesson on selling old parts before u try the new ones. I started getting nervous about finding a new set and didn't want to have to keep trying to find a set that would work. So I bought those back and put them back on. Got them painted up nice though 😎

Re: Help I ordered the wrong headers.

Glad it worked out for you. Obviously you sold to someone you know. If it was a craigslist or swap meet deal, they woukd have been gone with the wind!

Just curious what you used for prep and paint. I have never found paint that would stay on for very long.

Actually I had never met the guy. He was super nice when I told him what was going on plus his starter went out in his truck that night so I think he needed some money anyways 😃. All I did was use that header paint that you can buy from oriellys. I don't know if it will stick or not. I found a local guy that says he can ceramic coat them black and I will never have to worry about them again. I figured if the paint doesn't hold up I will just go get them ceramic coated. I will post a pic in a few
