engine swapping?

I've got a 64' c20, met a guy that has half of a 61' big window ( he literally cut the truck in half behind the cab ) anyway, he said it has a turbo 400 tranny and a 302 in it? said engine and tranny were mine for $200 or buy everything for $500 ( including air bag suspension ) my truck has a I6 230 with a 4 speed granny tranny, if i were to buy his tranny and engine ( been sitting for X amount of years ) and clean them up and get it running, will i have any problems dropping in the v8? are mount relocations necessary? can i keep my 4 speed manual? ( id rather die than get an automatic ) ill probably have to get a new driveshaft at length i need.
and lastly I'm running 4.65 gears in the back, if i gear down to 4.10 or 3.90 will i get better performance with a v8 or what i have now?

Re: engine swapping?

The 302 is either a bored out 283 or a 327 block with a 283 crank. Either way it is still a small block. It will drop right in where your I6 is and bolt right up to the bellhousing. You don't need to move anything. You can also bolt the flywheel and clutch from the 230 onto the 302. You will have to change the radiator to a V8/HD6 radiator which sits on top of the crossmember instead of on the lower lip.

There are no new gear offerings for the Eaton HO52 that is under your truck. You might get lucky and find a 4.10 3rd member. While a 4.10 gear isn't the best for highway cruising, that little 302 won't mind it. Those short stroke engines like rpm's and they don't make much low end torque. Depending on just how that 302 is built, it may or may not perform the way you are expecting. IMO you would be better off with a 307, 327 or a 350.

Before you spend much money on that Eaton HO52, I would seriously consider changing it for a 10.5" 14 bolt or a Dana 60. Those have much better gear options and a lot of aftermarket parts support.

Re: engine swapping?

302 SBC will bolt right in place of the 230 six, but in a real hot climate like you're in you will probably need to come up with at least a fan shroud of some sort (or an electric fan setup), and maybe the larger "V8" radiator if you don't have it already.

Nothing to do with the trans or anything needs to be dealt with, just the cooling side of things. I actually made a reverse swap from a 283 to a 250 six in my truck a couple months ago. Unbolt the six and bolt the bent eight in.

I have 4.10 gears in my truck; It does fine with the 250, and it also did fine with the 283. The 302 should do well if it doesn't have some stupid hot-rod cam in it.

EDIT: You beat me to it. No fair! I was typing...

Re: engine swapping?

BTW, I think a 302 that is just a 283 with a 327 block would be great. I didn't really find the 283 to lack that much power at low speeds, and the extra displacement shouldn't hurt that.

Re: engine swapping?

I still have the 283, but it's tired and shipping would be brutal, even if I just gave it to you.

If it was me, I'd be really interested in the $200 302/TH400. I think that's a great deal if the engine's any good, and you can get part of that back flipping the core TH400 you don't need.
