what kind of rubber?

I recently brought home my Dads 72 c30 longhorn and among some of the problems that come with a truck sitting for several years (slips, misses, and some rust) i got dry rot on the tires and I'm looking for good tires for a 72 one legger 3/4 ton

Re: what kind of rubber?

good question? non-posi?
Welcome to the forum 72LonghornII, would LOVE to see some pics of your truck, gotta love a longhorn!
A great tire size for your truck is 275-65-16 if you have 16" wheels. If you have 16.5" wheels (more likely), then 9.50x16.5 are a good choice. I've attached a few pics for reference so you can see what they look like. The white truck has the 275-65-16s and the green truck has the 9.50x16.5. Both are Firestone TransForce HT's - the 16.5 wheels have a few less tire options, but the Firestones are still around.

EDIT: TYPO CORRECTION: The tires on the 16" wheels are 265-75-16 - I swear I'm nto lysdexic... Sorry for any confusion - thanks Sideways!

Re: what kind of rubber?

One legger = non posi. It has transforce on it now, I just don't know enough about the truck to pick out tires for it without some insight.

On your white truck you mention 275/65-16" ,I have seen 265-75-16"but not the ones you mention. Are they hard to find?

Re: what kind of rubber?

DOH, I'm so sorry - thanks so much Sideways - I DID write 275-65-16! I've corrected in the above post also, just in case someone only reads it. The size on my white truck is 265-75-16. Great catch, sorry for the typo. there's no gouge like bad gouge...

Re: what kind of rubber?

So just to clarify, is your truck a C30 (1 ton) or a C20 (3/4)?
A Custom Deluxe or a Highlander maybe?

Re: what kind of rubber?

Are you sure you have 16" wheels? Mine were 16.5, and the truck came with 5 new tires that are pretty much unused (and I'm only keeping one as a spare).

Re: what kind of rubber?

C30. I forgot it is a 1 ton custom camper he just had it rated 3/4 with the state. I'm not real auto savy, my dad always did the work, since his passing I've got to learn on the fly.

Re: what kind of rubber?

Cool makes it easier when we know.
The Longhorns were built on the slightly longer wheelbase 1-ton frame in both C20 and C30 versions. The prime difference being the axles and springs between the two.
Since you have a C30 it would have the H072 rear axle rated at 7200 lb. Being an open differential (one-legger) is kind of hard to overcome as the only drop in is an expensive out of production No-Spin locker or with axle modifications, a 14-bolt Detroit locker.

Sorry to hear about your Dads passing it is a difficult way to learn. But the links I posted up in #8 will give you a good start and a factory driver's handbook (manual) is a good thing to have and read too. Reproductions are readily avaliable if yours is missing.

Since it is a C30 now I'd really like to see the SPID! :-)

Thanks, my dad was a member til his passing (dwaite72lnghrn). I have a mechanic friend that said he'd help me but for the sentimental value I'd like to do most work myself.

Re: what kind of rubber?

The interior was redone about 6 yrs ago so it's not factory. Neither is the motor, the 400 was swapped out with a 502 around the same time. I'll take some pictures of the inside after I get off work and post them.

Found this thread with some background, apparently it was his Dad's as well. Too cool. Unfortunately the pictures will not write for me. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ad.php?t=25644

Baltimore trucks generally did not have a trim code. However Highlanders did from my examples so its probably a standard Custom Deluxe.
