Decal placement

I am looking for a reference as to where I can put my decals in the engine bay, anyone have info on this or pictures? also which ones were on the 65 c10? Also dont know if this is a 230 or 250 is there a way to tell the difference? Not real familliar with the I6 Thanks as always.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1401896613

check the engine for stamping number on pasanger side of block and it will tell you that. the first few number combos should be "con 2 or con 4. then the date code starts with a letter which is the month then 2 numbers which are the day the last number is yr. then the stamping numbers are 7 digits long and that will tell the engine displacment. mine is (con 2. I 306. 3851659) not sure what "con 2" is, but its sept 30 1966. I6 292. hope this helps

con 2 is the conveyor line that it went down during production. Con 2 = conveyor 2

Engine decal is on the side of the valve cover. I've seen the decals about 1/2" - 3/4" higher than where I placed mine also.....can't say which is more correct, but you get the idea.

i saw it before, i had a change to get the same flywheel as in the pics, but felt $160 for something only i would know is there wasnt worth it

Looks like a later 250 to me, which is what a lot of these trucks end up with. Not sure when the change was made, but it looks like your valve cover has a press-fit rubber oil filler plug like my '71 250 does, and my '69 doesn't (not sure of when the change was made). AFAIK, the 63-66 truck engines all had script valve covers with only a twist-in breather and PCV valve hookup (later engines have another hole in the side to pull filtered air from the air filter instead of a breather). IIRC, '75 was when the integral head came out, so just by looking at it I'd guess you have something like a '70-'75 250.

I agree with you on the flywheel. I'd go for function over looks since no one will ever see it.

My stock 230, pre-clean. Decal is right up where the top edge of the cover is, and it starts just in front of that bolt recess.

Thanks, 1963c-10. I really need to go back through the site and redo it when I get back home. I actually had a page of visual clues like that for the 230-250's pretty much finished, but I never got around to putting it up. I'll have to at least get a good inline six ID page like that up soon, considering this is at least the second time that the subject has came up today!

Jay, did someone just stick a later oil filler cap in the place of the breather because they didn't know better, or does your engine have provisions to pull air from somewhere else for the PCV? I thought all the engines with the early script valve covers like that (that's what it is, right?) came with/were supposed to have a breather for the filler cap so that the PCV has somewhere to pull clean air from.

It was like that when I got it. I believe it should have a breather, although that filler cap looks very old. I'll find a breather for it somewhere...
