Sometimes these trucks find me...
So yea... you know how it goes. People know you've owned a handful of 67-72 gm trucks, so they ask you "you know anyone wanting to buy a truck like yours?". Of course I always tell em "yea" whether I know of somebody seriously interested or not... So, I guess about 6 months ago a guy I work with tells me he's got a buddy with one in his basement... said he's had it awhile and it's nice. I ask how much, he's gonna ask... doesn't seem to be going anywhere. This goes on and on, he keeps telling me about this truck, produces a dim cellphone pic where i can see nothing but the grill. Still hasn't come up with a price phone# or any other contact info for me.
In the meantime, I've got a buddy that has sold his 69 C-10 and is looking for a replacement. I've sent him to look at several trucks that I've found listed for sale and he hasn't bought any of em. Everything is either out of his price range or the seller has been less then honest in describing their truck... So, last saturday I get a message from my contact, all it says is "call me". Apparently his friend has decided to sell his truck. At this point all I know is that it's a 70 model swb and is "nice". I ask when is it going to be a good time to come look at it and the answer I get is "now". Alright! Now I'm the guy that knows a guy that has a truck for sale.... I round up my friend and we head out to look at this truck. Turns out it's less then 5 miles away. The owner said his uncle bought the truck in 1974 and it has always been garaged. Claims it has no rust... and it didn't. There wasn't even a speck of rust under the battery. All the common areas for rust on these trucks was immaculate. His uncle turned it over to him in the late 80's and he drove it a couple years. After that it was used to haul trash to the dump. He said he always made sure to get it out and drive it around a couple times a year until the carb started acting hokey (couple years ago by his guess). He said that he tried to get both his teenage son and daughter interested in it and neither one wanted it.... So anyway, my buddy that is truck shopping is really digging this pickup. The owner finally throws a number at him... they talk some more and my buddy counters with a lower offer... a half hour later they meet in the middle. So now my friend has found a unmolested 1970 swb garage kept GMC. Only picture i took of it in the basement... ![]() A couple cellphone pics... Yes... it's on a trailer. my buddy bought it without even trying to crank it or turn over the engine. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Sometimes these trucks find me...
The owner had all the paperwork dating back to when the truck was first purchased. It's a V8 Auto. I took a pic of the SPID but it didn't come out very well.
My buddy that bought it pushed it in his shop when he got it home and took the carb apart. He sent me a vid of it running a couple hours later. Said it never even puffed any smoke when it fired up for the first time. He's already driven it about 400 miles in the last week. Actually had a guy offer him a tidy profit on it if he'd turn it loose... told the gent that it took to long to find one this nice... he wants to keep it a little longer. He's already ordered a flip-kit for the rear. The front is going to get CPP zero offset dropped spindles as well as a disc brake conversion. Front and rear will also be 5 lug soon. He's going to wait to see how the front sits after he installs his LS1 before he commits to buying dropped springs. He'll also be installing a 4l60e. |

That looks like a really nice, original example + a Short/fleet...very nice.
Can you give us an idea as to what he got it for?...price range-wise? Coley

Re: Sometimes these trucks find me...
This is what I'll say about the price. He'd been looking for months. Everything he looked at in the 5-6k range needed rockers, corners, cab supports, work under the battery as well as on the doors. Most had issues with the bed. Most of the 7-8k trucks he'd seen were nicer... looked good at 15'-20' but still had issues. 10k was his max budget for a truck that he was going to immediately do an engine/trans swap on. He wasn't finding any trucks to suit him. Everything was either junk or way nicer and more expensive then what he wanted to pay. The week before he bought this one I'd found a 71 swb chevy that the owner claimed to be rustfree with factory ac (working) and a fresh engine for $7500. He called the owner who told him the truck sold an hour or so after he listed it... and it was a cut down longbed.
So, if you live in a part of the country where there's an abundance of 67-72 gm trucks with zero rust that you can drive home in the 5-6k range... I'm happy for you. But that's not the case where I am. I will say that he was offered 10.5k for it the day after he bought it by a gent that had also been looking for one of these trucks for awhile. My friend would of made a nice profit, but he would of had a hard time replacing it for the same $. So, now you've heard my roundabout summary of my personal experience with truck pricing in my southeastern region (250 miles of chattanooga tn). You also know how much he could of sold it for and made a tidy $. I guess, I didn't answer your question at all... but you can feel free to do the math in your head. You're probably close. ![]() I'll definitely have some more pictures soon. |

Re: Sometimes these trucks find me...
Funny this thread popped again today... I just talked to the owner a little while ago. As far as the better pics are concerned... well, I haven't even gotten to see the truck in person since he's cleaned it up. A couple of my other buddies have seen it going down the road... My buddy that bought the truck told me he's put about 6000 miles on it already... after basicly doing nothing but tinkering with the carb and an oil change and fresh battery. He's to the point where he's ready to start his LS swap... but has had an old guy beating him down on a pretty regular basis about buying it... and made him an offer that has trumped several other "good" offers... if the old guy is serious, he's gonna let it go... and I guess I'll try to help him find another one.
But if I get some more pictures between now and then, I'll defininitely add them to this thread! ![]() |

Re: Sometimes these trucks find me...
It's got that teal appeal!!
![]() Really nice find. I love the white cab top/bottom trim look. Classic and stylish. I think that's what they mean by timeless appeal ![]() Hope you two are loving each other.

Re: Sometimes these trucks find me...
Seems like the nice offers he is getting are because of the originality of the truck. Once he does the mods he is thinking of that goes out the window. But if he keeps all of the stock parts and doesn't cut the truck with his new mods maybe the price would still be up there?
