Re: Replacement Keys
If your door and ignition use the same key, then take apart the door handle and go with the lock cylinder to a locksmith, they can make a key for you.
If not the same, it will be difficult, to say the least, to get the lock cylinder out of the ignition, but worth a try. Failing that, you can get a whole new ignition switch, with lock cylinder and key, and replace the whole unit. |

Re: Replacement Keys
Change your keys!
If your truck is open, get a locksmith to change the door key asap. then order new ignition switch, lock cylinder and door locks from your favorite parts store.

Re: Replacement Keys
Got a question or two that would fit under this thread. Hope that's ok?
My door handle is aftermarket (new) and the truck came without a key. When I push the door handle down in the lock position from inside, it seems stiff and hard to lock. I can't imagine a key lifting the handle. Is this a common problem? It seems obvious that I will need to get the handle moving smoothly before even bothering with a key? And since I will need to get the mechanism operating more freely, is that just a matter or removing the door panel and spaying some silicone or lithium on the handle guts. FYI: 66 GMC |

Re: Replacement Keys
X2; all my trucks have a firm detent or whatever IIRC. The keyed lock is a separate mechanism.

Secondly , if you were to put the inside lever in the "lock" position and then shut the door, it will kick the lever back to the middle position. This is, of coarse, IF it is assembled and working correctly. These trucks are designed to not allow you to lock your keys in. In all actuality, the inside lever should not be in an "up" or "down" position. I believe they should be pointing mostly down and be operated either forward or rearward. This is why some worn latches may lock the doors when they are shut firmly, the weight of the lever handle causes it to drop and lock the doors. |
