Angry Drum Brake Help Needed!!!

Alright...... I've been working on my rear drums half the day and I'm ready to throw them through the window. I took them apart last week to rebuild them, thought I was being all clever by taking pictures, but obviously not enough, because I spend my day surrounded by the Haynes manual, printed pictures and a pile of parts and made no progress. Does anyone have a good source of a diagram of the rear brake drums that show how the things go together? Just when I thought I was making progress, I came across the "Shoe Guide" according to the Haynes, and I have no idea where to put it. I'm almost frustrated enough to just order the disk conversion kit and lose the drums!

Anyone got any ideas???

Step back, take a deep breath, drink a beer and you can approach it again in the morning. This came up a couple of weeks ago and somebody had posted a pic and diagram of how it all goes back together. I can tell you that the shorter shoe goes on the front. I'd do it for you, but that's a little difficult over the internet. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks.... I actually felt bad posting about this, because I know it has to have been covered before, and one of my other boards has "Use the **** search function" drummed into everyone's head, but with it being disabled, I looked through about 30 pages of this forum and couldn't find anything, so I just posted.

I've always hated drum brakes for this reason, and ours just seem to be more complex and poorly documented which just frustrates me more. I might go give it another try today and see if I have any better luck.

Thanks... that picture will help. One question I still have if anyone can answer is where does the "Shoe Guide" go? That's the thing that is about 1/4" thick and looks like a washer with "wings".

Anyone??

Shoe guide is at the top of the whole brake assembly. It goes on that post that sticks out above the wheel cylinder. Goes on behind the springs that rest on that post.

#1 Suggestion of all time for folks who don't do brakes often.Go ahead and buy the parts you need.Take the passenger side apart.Take the drivers side drumONLY off.Now you have a guide to use putting back the passenger side. When passenger side is done, don't put drum on until you use it for a guide to put the drivers side back together.
Now gather up your cores and go get credit for them.

Dandeluxe, I noticed you don't have the flat bar that has a spring on one end between your shoes ( I can't really describe it better than that but it fits above the axle in the square notches on the shoes...) When I changed my shoes I noticed my truck doesn't have them and it worried me (truck stilll stops) What are those things ??? Do I NEED them???

Thanks, Roger
