Rear axle option....

Rear end question:
I'm currently running a 72 Impala 12 bolt in the rear of my AD. I realize it's fairly strong and desirable, but there are a few things making it less so to me. First, it's a 2.72 ratio. I just came off the road from 1000 miles of hot rod magazines power tour and the 2.72 is nice, but I need to put a little more to the ground. I don't go 80 in her, so a 3.08 or 3.42 would be nice.

Second, it's 5 on 5 and the front is 5 on 4.75. Driving me nuts.

So... Is the 4x4 S10 rear the best option? Regearing and changing axle shafts and drums will be expensive compared to a junk yard replacement. I don't mind cutting and welding perches, so my principle concern is width and ratio.

Thanks!

Re: Rear axle option....

I have a axle out of a newer 4 x 4 Blazer. It is a little narrow, but with added spacers it is perfect.

3:43 ratio and $75 at the junkyard.

Re: Rear axle option....

I'm measuring 50" between the box, and about 58" between the mounting plates for the brakes. I haven't pulled the tires yet, but I'm assuming the wms to wms is about 62" currently. I'm running a 7 in wheel with 5 in of bs, but obviously I'm changing wheels.

What exactly is the optimal width, Hub flange to hub flange?

Re: Rear axle option....

I had a 66 Impala 12 bolt under my 48 in the early 80's that worked great and fit a lot better than some of the other rear ends do.

You could always have the axles and drums redrilled to go 5 on 4-3/4 and swap gears but that would probably cost more than changing axles.

I'm going late 70's disk brake Trans Am because a friend gave me one a few years ago.
