Welding Exhaust Manifolds
Anyone done this? I don't know the type of cast iron so I cannot identify the exact welding procedure in my tech books. If someone has done this already it would help to know what procedure works. This is a temporary fix so thanks for offering to send me your free manifold...I am going to headers in the future and don't want to waste the torch work, Bustem, skinned knuckles and gaskets on a replacement right now.

i have tried to weld manifolds and it is very hard!!! i used an arc welder and the right rods and i wasnt able to complete it!! i have heard that brazing them works but i dont no how the brazing deals with the heat of the manifold.
the way i was taugh was to heat the manifold with the torch and then start to arc weld on it but it isnt the easiest form of welding Good luck!! Chris |

Depending on the needed repair, brazing has worked well and held up over time. Typical repairs that have lasted are stud "ears" where part of the threads were still there and brazing was used to complete the ear with the stud in place.

High nickle rods as others have pointed out. Plus you need to heat it up AND COOL IT DOWN. Heat it up with a torch and bury it in sand when you are done so it cools down slowly.
