Axle tube seal??

Is there a seal that should go between the outer axle and axle tube? This is in the front on a 70 k5. Just seems like there should be something to keep water and dirt out. There was nothing there on disassembly.

Re: Axle tube seal??

The only axle seals are the ones right next to the center section.

Re: Axle tube seal??

I did see a aftermarket seal for there. Dont know if it works or not. It would be a tough place to seal because the shaft moves around when turning left and right. Not to mention if water did get in there, it would stay in there until you removed the seal to let it out.

I made a scraper on a piece of pipe to clean out the axle tube whenever i pull my axle out. It dosent make it squeaky clean but it gets the big chunks out.

Re: Axle tube seal??

I agree with OLDCHEV4X4 I made a scraper from a large washer and 1/2" steel rod, whenever I have an axle out the tube gets a good cleaning. You would be surprised at the sludge and scale you can get out of the axle tube. If you don't do this that stuff gets dozed right into the middle of your ring & pinion case.
