I have a 1985 Scottsdale which I bought a few weeks ago and I hate the engine. It has a gas guzzling newer 350 block with a 268 cam, aluminum intake, 4bbl Edlebrock 650 carb, HEI ignition, and headers with flowmasters. I bought the truck mainly for the body and interior, but want to go back with a smaller more fuel efficient engine. I would like to find a nice used 305 2bbl close to Memphis, that I can use for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

how many mpg you getting on the 350?

Let me tell you, 305s just plain suck. Reliable yes, fuel efficient or powerful no. My 305 gets 10mpg. If your 350 gets anywhere near 14, keep it.

The 350 is getting around 8-9mpg right now. The carb is running really rich, and it has a lower engine noise, like a wrist-pin or crank bearing. The truck is going to driven mainly by my 16 year old son, to and from work, and I don't want him racing around with a bigger engine. I drove a buddy's truck with the 305, and it seemed plenty powerful for light hauling and got decent mileage (17-18mpg). That is why I started looking for the 305. I basically want a totally stock engine to go back into it.

I have a heck of an offer on a 1993 EFI Chevy 305 out of a cop car, but don't know much about adding the computer and other stuff to make it work. Would it be easier to buy it and add a different intake and fuel pump, or try to get all the stuff to make the EFI work?

Buy the intake and fuel pump, I transplanted a 350 out of a '92 model Caprice into my 71.. super easy. You can counter drill the four middle bolt holes of your intake you have now to match up to the tbi heads, just be careful to not take too much out. Frank
