1960 c-10 front disc brakes, my way!

So when I started into my project 60' I knew I would be converting to disc brakes and I wasn't ditching my torsion bars. So I started doing some research and figured out it was going to be rather expensive or I was going to need to get fancy with my skills. I thought to my self what would be better than disc brakes that have bearings that need to be repacked all the time and my answer was anything new....... So here I am with something I think will be pretty amazing, a good friend of mine just finished putting a straight axle in a 2000' Chevy 1500 2wd! I decided I would retain the inner part of the knuckle and just ditch the spindle, there was a lot of trial and error but it should work rather well, the first picture is a test plate made to adapt the unit bearing to my knuckle. I made a few revisions before I decided to have my final plate lasered out of 1" thick plate.

Next thing was to put all of this together and see how the fitment was on the truck...not only did it fit amazing I lowered the front 2" at the same time, mind you that is adjustable because of the torsion bars! With out the rotor it is about 1/4" narrower than stock! Have to do a little welding on it this weekend but the plate is 100% bolt on!

Not only did I retain stock ball joints but also uses stock tie rods

Way to go, thinking outside of the box

Were you able to get that 1" laser cut? That'd be one big laser. One of my suppliers has what is called a Kinetic table. That would be ideal for making that bracket.

Are you going to be using the 2000 C1500 rotor and caliper also? I didn't realize that the 2000 C1500's were 6 lug.

Captainfab: I would have thought you'd know that? A lot of the later model GM stuff is 6x5.5. A late 80's light duty 3/4 ton is also six lug;

It was laser cut I work at a company with some rather larger equipment so it makes it nice. I will be using the rotor and caliper should have it tied up by Sunday !

I assume you knew that they do make stock and drop "disc brake conversion" spindles for the 60-62 torsion bar trucks?
Most can be found for around $229.00.

1964 actually, its for sale haha but at a higher price its a NOS one got it and a bunch of other NOS parts from the dealership I worked at!

There aren't many later model 2wd's around here......most everything is 4wd. The few 2wd, 90's models that I have seen were 5x5.

Yes I did know about the aftermarket spindles but then your still stuck with a higher matience bearing setup not to mention older technology of brakes, my setup will use rotors, caliper brackets, calipers pads and the unit bearing from any 2wd 2000's Chevy and I still have 6 lug...plus I have about 60 bucks into my kit so far.....


As for offroading I am mainly building my truck to be my daily driver/ tow rig, I am big into rock crawling, the truck in the background is an 89' Toyota 3 link front 4 link rear, lockers front and rear, cage.... And blown up motor but the motor for that is almost done!

So what is carrying the load of the front end where the plate mounts to the front spindle? Did you machine it in a way to take the shear load off the bolts?

Are you also using the brake booster and master from he 2000 model? how about power steering?

I left about 1/2" of the base of the spindle on the knuckle and machined clearance for the hub, the 1" plate will be welded to the knuckle along with bolted using the 2 bottom bolts that hold the steering arm on and the upper blind hole which is a 5/8" bolt I am running a booster/ master from an 89' and no power steering

Well I put about 200 miles on this setup so far and it works amazing! Will be taking back apart in about a week or so to check everything over
