Hey guys, so my steering box is leaking! Has anyone tried to rebuild one? Do you have any idea how to? I need some help. Thank you.

Re: Steering gear box rebuild
Its just as easy as following this thread:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=619634 If you have an Auto Zone close, you should be able to get the Pitman Arm puller tool from their loan a tool program.

Re: Steering gear box rebuild
I would just get a rebuilt one. I got one from Auto Zone maybe 10 years ago and it is holding up well. I have seen the core value from $30 to $150, so it will pay to shop around. Mine only cost about $25 because the core value at that time was about $90.
I would check youtube for videos on replacing the steering gear - even later models will give you a good idea. You can also check the usual online suspects: www.rockauto.com www.oewarehouse.com www.oehq.com www.gmapartsdirect.com www.autopartstomorrow.com |

Re: Steering gear box rebuild
In my opinion, they are a pain in the ass! I wont rebuild one again. As far as just re-sealing one, they arent too bad. Its when rebuilding one and dealing the the Teflon seals and ball bearings that it starts to suck.

Re: Steering gear box rebuild
I just paid $150 to get my pump, and box rebuilt plus the steering weight tightened up. The kits alone for a quality set were $85.

Re: Steering gear box rebuild
Plus, if it does leak after you are done with your rebuild you won't have a warranty like you should have from the parts store or service shop. I like the idea of pump. box, lines, all replaced at the same time, maybe even a new rag joint.
