How much trans fluid before first fireup?

My transmission is a 200-4R and according to the Internet, it takes 6 qts. As I understand it you must check it with the engine running, so I just put 5 in and I'll check it later.

I can't envision it burning up from being a quart low while I'm busy setting the timing and so, can it?

I don't want to err on the side of too much. I've had to syphon the dry sump on my Vette and it sucks (no pun).

Is this just a fluid change or is the trans newly rebuilt? It makes a big difference.

Newly rebuilt. I -don't- think the shop I used street tests them (FB Transmissions in NY where it was originally built actually sticks them in a car before shipping them).

Empty it takes ~11 quarts. I'd put 5 in, start it, and immediately add 4 more and start checking the level. Add until it's on the dipstick and then shift the trans. Keep checking. After a test drive check it again.

Re: How much trans fluid before first fireup?

It can take up to 11, 6 in the tranny, 2-5 in the converter depending on size if bone dry. I hope you put fluid in the converter before installing. When I worked in a trans shop we would fill it to the stick having at least a quart in the converter. Then start the vehicle and shift it to reverse, down to first back to reverse then to second until we went through all the gears, recheck, drive and recheck.
