Re: custom camper

Welcome Mike - welcome to the forum. It can be either, although most folks usually ordered the nameplate on 3/4 tons.
Look at your VIN - if it starts as:
CE247 - it's a 3/4 ton
CE147 - it's a 1/2 ton
Note, the "E" can be an "S" if it was a 6 cylinder originally - E if it was a V8.

Re: custom camper

While we are talking about custom campers, what exactly does it mean? What is the difference between a custom camper and other options?

Re: custom camper

Custom Camper, RPO Z81, is just a "nameplate" option that you could purchase if you had a minimum set of the heavier duty options. You could have those options without buying the custom camper nameplate also. Has nothing to do with camper mirrors or camper wiring - they could be ordered with the nameplate or without and the nameplate could be ordered without them also - although folks that opted camper mirrors and wiring often opted for the custom camper nameplate also, and vice versa.

In 67-8, it was a rectangular fender emblem. In 69-71, it was a different fender emblem that said customcamperx0 (the "x" being 1, 2, or 3, for half, 3/4, 1 ton trucks). In 72, custom camper nameplate became the script type (for chevys) and was moved to above the door handle. It was basically just a nameplate you could purchase to let folks know your truck was "made for campin!" I love em. Below are the emblem types:

Re: custom camper

Thanks Jocko, that's a lot of info, my custom camper is a 307 with a 4 speed granny box, no power brakes or power steering but it just keeps on going like every chevy truck does. Thanks again, uncle-mike

Re: custom camper

Great info Jocko! I'll add this - if your 72 Custom Camper came from the Flint plant the emblems were placed more remote from the door edge than other plants.
