Square under the skin

So we are starting the cage work in project Cannonball C10 and have removed the inner roof and B pillar skins, and the dashboard. Thought you all might find it interesting to see what it looks like under the skin inside the cab of a square.

Taking care of some dents in the roof should be easier now

Looks like we'll need to hit the insides with POR-15 before reassembly.

Very interesting! I bet all Squares have that rust under there.

Re: Square under the skin

Curious, how does the metal dash come out? Sawzall or simply unbolt?

A bit of both. It bolts in on the sides and required a cutoff wheel up by the windshield.

Except for the ones that were ELPO dipped. The primer should have gotten up in there on those. Unless they had a big air bubble up there.

Mikentosh - where was your truck built and what model year?

Thanks for posting; I'm getting a kick since I started building squares in 1979 and since I currently have design/release responsibility for the K2XX cab and pickup box. (...and G van underbody, too).

Keith, what year did they start dipping the cabs?

I was thinking you would be one of the few people on the board who's seen it all under the skin

Well its supposed to be a '74 model year built in Fremont, however its got all the signs of a later 70's cab (different windshield wiper switch and motor). The door jamb tag is currently attached with plain rivets as well so that will have to be corrected.

A good question for all of you is which way the door tag is supposed to be oriented. I've seen it both horizontal and vertical in the various trucks in the pick 'n pull. Is there a specific way it would have been mounted in '74s?

It varied by assembly plant but we started dipping pickups in Flint around '78 or '79. The equipment was installed and functioning right before I started.

Line 2 (Blazer and Suburban) was a little before that.

It had a very distinctive smell. You could smell it as you drove by on I-69 or I-75.
