preventing further rust.. for a bit

Wondering what you guys are using to slow down the rust on original trucks?
Just picked up my new truck and I'd like to keep the rust from getting worse while I work on it. Mostly concerned with the undercarriage. Oil/Kerosene? WD40?? [IMG][/IMG]

Not to be off topic or anything but the undercoating that's already on your truck is the 2nd truck I've seen with this silver undercoating. I'm pulling parts off one at a junk yard with the same stuff underneath an I'm thinking did they paint it silver or what?

Rust continuously progresses, no matter what. Surface rust won't drastically erode things overnight though, so you do have time. In the end, to stop rust, you need to get rid of it. So you can sand it, use chemicals like naval jelly, or blast it, then seal it with primer, paint, undercoating, por 15, ect. I suppose you could seal it with rust underneath, but then your panel would still eventually weaken and erode, you just wouldn't be able to see it as well. Just my .02

i use por 15 after using there marine clean. just be carefull on the fumes and follow directions.

My brother and I restored his father-in-laws Dodge Lil Red Express probably about 8 years ago. His Father in law is "frugal" and didn't want panels replaced, just treated and filled. We ground down some pretty serious rust, coated them with this product as directed, filled, primed, painted. I was skeptical, but 8 years now and not a hint of the rust returning. We used the can on the right.

If you're working with something that is protected from getting wet, Picklex20 will stop rust from forming indefinitely on carbon steel. I had a mint condition grille soda blasted about 10 years ago, and sprayed it with Picklex 20. It hangs in my basement (dry) and looks exactly the same as the day it was done. It's really nice if you have to strip something to bare metal that can't be finished right away.
