Question new to 4x4's....How do you get into 4lo w/o grinding gears

As i said i'm new to the 4x4 world. I have a 97 full size chevy 4x4. I have no problem going into 4hi, but 4lo grinds when i am tring to get into it. I have been shutting the truck off and grabbing 4lo. what is the correct way to select 4lo quietly and smoothly. Any help will be great. Seth

I hope that you are not trying to shift into 4wheel drive on the go, especially into 4 low Always come to a stop and put in neutral(on the column or push in the clutch for manual) and then select 4hi or 4low. If you're still having problems then my best guess is that somethings wrong with your 4wheel drive. Hope this helps.

Its okay to shift into 4hi while moving in your truck just not 4lo come to a stop and it should go in fine.

If I remember correctly, on my 95 Yukon you are supposed to be going like 2 or 3 mph and put tranny in nuetral than shift to 4 Low.

thanks guys, no i'm not shifting into 4lo on the move. I have in problem with 4hi. OK with truck idling in neutral and tranfer in 2hi, if i shift the transfer into neutral then try and go into 4lo or 2hi i get a very loud grind. Like putting a auto trans in park while moving but louder. If I shut the truck off then select the range i have no problems. Maybe this will help
thanks Seth

some times if you stop and shift into reverse and apply slight preasure to shifter it will slip right in when gears line up if not shift back to neutral then drive its worked for me

You need to put your truck in park or push the clutch in and
wait for the internals of your trans to stop turning. Then you
can put it in 4 low. The transfer case isn't syncronized like a transmission.

My auto trans 4x4s do it too. The trick is to do exactly what you are already doing, just don't pause in transfer case neutral. The automatic will start to spin even in transmission neutral with no load on it (ie when you put the transfer case into neutral) then the spinning transfer case input gears will grind when you try to re-engage them.

If I stop in neutral, the only way I can get the transfer case back into gear without grinding is to shut the engine off first.

I have had no problems now that i am putting the truck in park, giving it a sec to stop, then slamming into gear. Thanks for the help. Yes all fluids are full.
