Found a running 235 with PG tranny
Hello all, found a 54 235 with power glide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oTeM3pWaXo
Will this engine fit nicely in a 49 Chevy pickup? Can I split off the tranny and go with a 4 speed or is it better to go with the PG? Whats a good price for this set up? Thanks Pat

Re: Found a running 235 with PG tranny
The 54 235 should fit nicely and bolt right in to your 49. If you do decide to use a 4 speed flywheel from a 54-62 235 you will need to get a starter from those years too, The starters (I am told) do not interchange.. The earlier 216/235 flywheel tooth counts are different than the latters. The bell housing from your 49 and your trans from that will physically bolt right up too.

Sounds good, could I use the Power Glide tranny in the pick up? Or is this a big conversion job?

I'm not positive on that one as the powerglide is a close drive "car' trans and have never studied what it takes to hook one up in a truck. Good old trans in their day but rather spendy to get rebuilt now I'd think. I road thousands of miles in the back seat of my grand parents 54 Chevy two door sedan going on vacations when I was a kid and lots of fishing trips up in the hills in it. As for swapping the engine into the truck with the 4 speed that was just a regular and common engine replacement in these trucks back in the late 50's and through the 60's and 70's. You do have to make sure that the crank is drilled for a pilot busing though.

Re: Found a running 235 with PG tranny
So any 235 inline 6 out of any car truck from Chevy (say an Impala from 61) will fit where my 216 used to?

Yes, might have to tap the front mount bosses on later model since they were set up for side mounts. They will also have the better pressure oiling system.

Found another 235. 1956 out of a pickup truck. Looks like an automatic with powerglide.

Re: Found a running 235 with PG tranny
Guys, I had a 4 speed set up in the 49 and would prefer the 3 speed that is on the 235. Is this an easy drop in as well to the rolling 49 frame?
Thanks Pat
