Where to find a plastic fast idle cam for a quadrajet from a 1969 396

My Dad is rebuilding the Quadrajet on a 1969 C10 396 truck I picked up and he found the fast idle cam on the right side of the carb is red plastic and cracked. He has owned and repair shop since 1972 and worked at a GM dealer in the late 60's and remembers the plastic breaking off and the throttles going open. I am trying to find a repair or replacement for this plastic coated lever. Any Ideas? The carb number is 7029214. I have another 1969 C10 396 carb and a 1972 C20 402 carb but neither one has this plastic lever. If it matters this truck is from the south and I think originally came from California. It does have a smog/ air pump set up on the engine. I can get pictures but Dad has the carb at his house right now and I have not been there yet to get any. Thanks for any help.

Thanks guys, I will try to get to my Dad's tomorrow and get a couple pictures but it is a red plastic lever on the passenger side behind the choke linkage.

Here are some pictures of the arm. Dad says if he remembers correctly they had different colors for different fast idle speeds.

I just did a Google search instead of a forum search and found who you are talking about. I will check over there and see what I can find. Thanks

If perchance it should break it won't effect your normal idle speed. It'll effect your high idle speed when the choke is working.

If he dosen't have one he might give you some leads anyway. Another source might be V8Buick.com, a lot of those Buick guys run quads and there's quite a few retired GM employees.

I am really only wanting the red plastic arm part because I have the correct original carb for the 69 C10 396 but I do have an extra 402 carb that has these numbers on it. 7042206 1472 QA That I might trade.

I think the part you are looking for is an aftermarket piece. The carb below is a big block divorced choke carb in stock trim and, if you look closely, you can see the metal casting used for the fast idle cam. Call or go to Quadrajetparts.com. They have it.

I can't help you find one, but my 69 with a 350 also has the red plastic cam. It is original to the truck, not an aftermarket piece. If you look closely you can see it in the picture below.

Keep up the search, and let us know where you find one.

Interesting. I've never seen anything other than the metal fast idle cams. Is this another '69 unique feature?

Thanks for the information. So now we know it is not big block only.

I have another 69 C10 396 and it does not have the red plastic. It is just metal.

I have the carb rebuilt and think I will just try it the way it is for now and try to come up with something before it breaks more. I will let you guys know if I figure out something. Thanks everyone.

When I was a kid, I bought a 69 Impala from my grandpa, that he purchased new. It had a 350 with a plastic cam q-jet. 69 is the latest I have ever seen them. Seems like I remember reading in a q-jet book, that they were used on early carbs.

According to the NHTSA website back on February 28,1969 GM issued a recall (# 69V031000) because the plastic fast idle cam could crack and may cause the throttle to stick in a partially open position. The fix was to install a metal fast idle cam. Most likely carbs made after a certain date came from the factory with the metal fast idle cam already installed and many older carbs got the original plastic cam replaced by dealers performing the recall procedure.

The recall covered 1968-69 models by all GM divisions.
