Said You Like Pictures?

This was an ODG Bell Telephone work truck back in 1969.

I finally sobered up enough to fiddle with installing the original type outside rear view mirrors after painting the polished stainless base, and thought I would finally post a few (...dozen) pictures.

Actually used a piece of copper wire to get that threaded plate into position long enough to get one screw started, and they then went together without too much more trouble and with no one else's help either...whew!

I'm happy enough with them, although they definitely are larger than that plastic O'Riley's one that I brushed up against in the garage with my shoulder and snapped off.

These steel ones will dislocate my shoulder if I try that again!

Anyway some pictures of my interior with my 8" Rockford Fosgate sub-woofer in between the bucket seats and my B&M trans. cooler gauge in the dash and...

The engine is a .030 over 350 CI with TRW Forged Flattops, Crane cam and roller tipped rockers, Edelbrock Performer carb. & intake, and these hard to find camel hump heads (.194/.150) with accessory holes and induction hardened seats for unleaded fuel.

...well you did say you like pictures.

Thumbs up Re: Said You Like Pictures?

Nice looking step man! Don't get mad about people not replying. It's just they don't think to after looking.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Said You Like Pictures?

WOW YOU GUYS!

Now I feel like an idiot, but to be honest I wasn't really mad I was only kidding with you.

The engine compartment is a greasy mess and the only excuse I can come up with is that I drive with the hood down so who the heck is going to see it anyway.

...of course I didn't anticipate joining a '67-'72 Chevrolet truck forum either.

Glad you like the color, the daughter of the gentleman I bought it from about 20 years ago picked it out he told me.

Suppose now I'll have to clean up the engine bay etc.

Re: Said You Like Pictures?

I literally read 20x more threads than I respond to... and I've made a lot or responses over the years!!!

Looks great! I have the same mirrors and I remember the backing plate being a pain. I used little rolled up dots of strip caulk to hold mine in place.

Some people complain that these mirrors shake/vibrate too much to be usable. I put the same ones you did (correct for my 67) back on the truck around 2006 and I have no visibility or vibration issues... I've always wondered if those with the vibration issue have a problem with their truck or they left off the backing plate.

Re: Said You Like Pictures?

Love it. I'd love it more with factory wheels. I don't even have factory wheels on mine, but there's something about a shortbox stepside that is so era-specific. I don't even know if they still make a stepside these days. It's rare enough to see a new regular cab short box.

Actually I still do have the original wheels that came with it, but as long as the chrome ones stay chrome, and not all rusty as many seem to become over time, I do like them well enough.

I also still have the original 4.11 differential that I swapped out for a much more highway friendly 3.07 one.

That 100 cu. in. engine size increase didn't hurt the acceleration too much.

As far as lowering it a little, that wouldn't be a bad idea, but it seems everybody around here does that and I kind of like the idea of this truck appearing stock in that respect.

...um I kind of forgot to include a few interior shots.

Hey thanks for the kind words on the truck everyone.

When I first bought this truck, it had a really nice reupholstered color matched bench seat that the seller told me he had just paid the Sure-Fit company $400 to re-cover.

But at one time in a '70 Nova that had a bench seat, I was stopped in traffic and was rear ended pretty hard, and because I was watching the traffic in front of me, I didn't see it coming.

I didn't have the head rests up and the impact darn near tore my head off!

I ended up giving away the bench seat to a friend almost immediately in exchange these high back buckets with adjustable headrests that I found in a salvage yard for $35 because I would hate to think what might happen to me if I were to be hit like that again, sitting in a bench seat with a truck window behind my head...

OK enough story telling...

Anyway, these seats came out of a small pickup truck that someone else had transferred in, so I really have no idea exactly what they originally came out of, but you're right, they are pretty darn comfy IMHO.

The ratchet shifter is a B&M that is a real joy because no matter how hard I smack it forward, it doesn't miss the 1-2 or 2-3 shift, and makes me look like I know what I'm doing.
