LS Transmission Help?
Hey guys, I am starting the process of installing a LS (5.3 or 6.3) into my 65. I was wondering what transmission will fit without cutting up the floor in a LOW hump truck. I will have a CPP 5/7 static drop if that matters and I am using the CPP LS swap kit. Thanks.....

Is this a 47 or a 77 were talkin about? Are you looking for an auto or manual trans? Give us something to work with here The 4l60e is the smallest you'll get w/ the motor, and it fits into most swaps without much clearance issues. It takes up the same space as the 700r4, and only a little more than the th350, just longer. The th400 has a fatter case, as does the 4l80e which is also longer. The 4l80e is another trans commonly found behind the ls engines. Its beefier, but weighs more and uses more power. I have one in my 66, and at least for the 60's trucks, it fits without having to modify the tunnel. Manual trans folks use the m22, the t5, t56, it all depends.

Re: LS Transmission Help?
BR3W CITY, Thanks for the reply. I meant to say automatic transmission. The LS3 6.2 is what I am leaning towards and I want the strongest trans I can get without having to cut up the floor. The 6l90e looks like it came out of a dump truck and I'm sure that it will require a lot of cutting. My 65 C10 is really clean with good floor pans (34000 miles) so I kinda don't want to mess with the floors but, I will if I have to I have a T56 Mag in my Nova and I can tell you it's the best manual trans I have ever shifted.

I think 4L80 is the biggest/strongest with low hump but others may need to chime in and I haven't done this test fit myself yet

Re: LS Transmission Help?
5.3L / 4L60e was no problem in my 66 low hump
It's (4L60e) also the weakest so if your planning high HP application... skip it and go 4L80e or 6L80e My 5.3L is just going to be a cam/exhaust daily driver... 4L60e fits the bill as I probably won't have a rear tire wide enough to ruin the trans. (get traction) Also a dime/dozen to find/replace if/when I grenade it

Re: LS Transmission Help?
I put the 6.0 and 4L80E in my 71 with small hump with no problems at all. Couldn't ask for a better street combo.

Re: LS Transmission Help?
Anyone know the difference between a 4x4 and 2wd 4l60e ?
I know the 4x4 is shorter, but by how much? If I have to shorten my drive shaft anyway, would it matter which I use in a '66 Suburban?

On a 4l60e or 700r4, the length should be the same, but its the tailshaft sections that are different. Fwiw, TCI has diagrams of most of them. http://www.tciauto.com/tc/trans-dim/#4L60Elate
