1971 Big Block carb number?
Can anyone with an original 1971 402 BB carb tell me the number stamped on the side? I'm not so sure I have the original carb for mine. I thought the number for an older GM vehicle started with a *70* instead of a *170*. Pictures?

I believe the "170" sequence started in 1976.

Get your carb number and look here to see if it's listed.

Re: 1971 Big Block carb number?
My 1971 Super has it original quadrajet carb. The number is 7041209. The truck is an Atlanta built factory BB/auto. The info in the service manual supports this number . I will post a pic later if you would like. Are you wanting to go back original?
Mike Ps. I'm not trying to step on any toes, but you will probably see info stating that auto transmissions must have even numbered carbs, i.e. 7041208. That is not correct, at least in this case. I will post a copy of the page out of the service manual if I can find it. Last edited by Mike's money pit; 07-17-2014 at 01:46 PM. Reason: Added info |

Here is a link to a previous thread that covers this exact question. The document I was referring to is pictured in that thread.

If you don't have them at least download copies of the factory service and overhaul manuals. They are a great back to basics reference.
RTFM ... Read The Factory Manuals... download 'em here

Re: 1971 Big Block carb number?
Looks like I don't have an original carb. The guy said the carb I have was already on the truck when I sold the truck to him back in 1989. *I* might have put another carb on the truck when I owned it back in the 80's. I don't remember though.
Thanks for the replies and the shop manual info...very valuable information.
