advice on removing rattle can paint
The previous owner of my 62 c-10 rattle canned over the original awesome mint green or whatever the name for it is. Most of the sections are chipping away revealing the original paint and i'd like to get it all back to that and let it patina from there. Any advice or tips for trying to get off the few layers of rattle can and not hurting the og paint all that much? I'm not too worried about going too deep into the og green paint, but just looking for a method that might not take too much paint off and also not take all summer to remove. Thanks so much!

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
I use either thinner or graffiti remover from lowes. Have had good success with both.

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
Ditto on the graffiti remover or "Goof Off". If you use thinner, make sure it's paint thinner (mineral spirits), NOT lacquer thinner. The exact type of rattle can paint is everything here. Some will just wipe off, others will be a bear. If a mild solvent won't loosen it, it's going to be a bit risky using a more volatile solvent as that could soften the very paint you're trying to save. In that case, a very fine (and careful) wet sanding and buff-out might be your answer. Too many unknowns to accurately predict an outcome. Be patient and good luck!

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
Depending on how much there is and how much patina you want, a DA and some 400-600 will work quickly, but you'll burn through on some edges, etc. Could end up with a great fauxtina job. The factory sealer/primer is tough stuff, i had some left after doing under the hood with 80 grit (!!!) on the da to remove this tar crap. That yellow undercoating stuff really stood up.

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
I've searched this topic before but somehow missed the Graffiti Remover.
The black paint inside my cab was touched up with rattle can. I will try Graffiti Remover.

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
I recently bought a 1970 Triumph Bonneville that the PO had "touched up" some of the frame and such. I used acetone and it took the rattle can paint off and left all the original paint. Hit it with some polishing compound and it looks great. I imagine the original paint is lacquer and that may make a difference.. maybe try a small test area..

Re: advice on removing rattle can paint
Since I'm planning on saving as much of the original paint on my bedsides figured I give the Acetone a test... Here's the primered/bondo'd panel before
And here is the panel after about 5 minuets of work. The rest of the primer will come off eventually but there was no red paint on the rag.
