Another A833 question
Thinking of making the swap from 700R4 to A833, will I need to cut the floor and put a bolt in hump? Going to look at the trans today so I will try to get as many of the parts I need off the donor truck.

Re: Another A833 question
I would guess that all you need is a slot for the shifter and the clutch parts.

Re: Another A833 question
Depending on the year of the donor and your truck, the hump might be welded in. Later trucks were one piece stampings with the floor pan I believe.
Manual trans truck all had high hump floors. If you are getting everything from a donor truck, get everything. Crossmember, driveshaft, don't skimp or you'll regret it later. I bought just the transmission and bellhousing off craigslist for $70. Granted I got lucky and am getting a deal on the parts I'm missing, plus it's not going into a square, so it could have been much more expensive being an incomplete trans. |

Re: Another A833 question
Remeber shifters are Hurst, unique for this application, and there is no direct aftermarket bolt in.
Also bell housings 'may' be unique dependingon exactly which year the trans came from. And yes, you wil need t oget a high hump. Would not hurt uif you can cut the floor out of the donor, get all the way to the firewall kick up to make it easy to locate the hole.

Mine is the high hump, but stamped floor (not bolt in).

Re: Another A833 question
Like Keith's my 86, is high hump welded in too. I have a few pics on my build of shifter, etc. Can get some more next week too, if needed. It is a hydraulic clutch, left side on bell housing.
I got hose, line and two cylinders new from Fisher Auto Parts - Federated Auto Parts for 86'. The fire wall cylinder comes with a rod, that connects to the clutch pedal. Trying to remember how the lower cylinder mounts?? think it bolts to bell housing or something, and their is a small rod that goes from cylinder to clutch fork. Can look for sure next week if needed. let me know. I may have a few more pics I can post, before going to see truck at body shop next week. Les Last edited by aotte1; 07-21-2014 at 10:42 PM. |

Re: Another A833 question
To be honest, it would be nice to have one more gear on the low side.
Launching with a trailer is a bit tricky with the current set up. But - it's such a sweet little trans that I am not bothered enough to do anything about it. K

Keith, I meant to ask, would you recommend towing in overdrive with the A833?

Re: Another A833 question
When I still had it... I swapped the Saginaw 3 speed in my 73 C10 for a Saginaw 4 speed out of a car and didn't change the floor at all.
The A833 isn't significantly larger. Will it hit the low hump floor or can he forgo the high hump tunnel?

I'm not sure if the A833 would actually fit but the hump was provided because of the shifter, or if the body guys were just being especially conservative. Might be able to get by with a low floor but require a larger cutout for the shifter. K

Re: Another A833 question
Keith,
Sort of on the overdrive question, I was told by a Chrysler transmission professional that the trans is good for up to about 300 Hp including some level of power shifting. If you granny shift it, reasonable higher HP is not an issue. Any knowledge of what are it limits. Les |

Re: Another A833 question
I do not know.
I suspect it is different for the cast iron MOPAR 1:1 transmissions vs our aluminum case with the overdrive. I know of some MOPAR guys that race these transmissions but can't comment on horsepower levels (or amount of maintenence). No mention of horsepower limitations in my favorite A833 link: http://www.customclassictrucks.com/t..._transmission/ K

Re: Another A833 question
Looked at the trans on Sunday. Shifter and shift rods as well as the bell housing are there. Downside is the bolt on handle is gone and bell housing was broken where the slave cylinder mounts. I believe this could be welded. The truck did have the high hump in the floor however is was badly damaged in the crash. Checked out the pedal assembly and it was bent also. Told him I would get back to him as his asking price is near a good 700R4.

Re: Another A833 question
Get him down on his price. Tell him his price is good for complete changeover and his is partial. Those are the essential parts that he has, though,so a great start. The shift lever should interchange with other Hurst levers.
Someone said it would be nice to have 4 speeds plus overdrive. Well, that wouldn't be this transmission. This one is 3 speeds plus overdrive.

Re: Another A833 question
I paid $250 each for mine some years ago, with shifters and bells. 1 4wd mech clutch and 1 2wd hydro clutch. Another $75 for hydro pedal and cylinders, $50 for bolt in high hump. And some day i'll get around to installing one behind the L6.
I personally wouldn't trust a welded up slave ear, but maybe a hydo throwout bearing conversion would work. The shifter handle I think is not unique, but the mechanism seems to be. And 4wd one seems beefier but off to the side, probably to clear the t-case shifter. As far as capacity, remember these were never offered behind anything stronger than a stock 305, and never in a 3/4 ton. The gear swap and aluminum case greatly reduced the torque capacity. For my 6.2 diesle this is in the 150hp / 250 lb-ft torque range. These are NOT the A833 Hemi boxes!
