Starting issues

Need some help guys...

I just put in a new starter and battery last week and all of a sudden I'm having a starting issue today. When I turn the ignition no noise or anything. The lights and radio still work so there's power for sure. The only thing that happens when I turn the ignition is these wires start to kick off a little smoke. Any guidance you guys can give would help a lot.

Only other thing I can see that I may be missing is this unplugged harness underneath the dash at the fuse box...

Thanks
Slim

Re: Starting issues

The round black thing in the wire behind your one way vacuum valve for the brake booster is a fusable link. Similar to a fuse, in that it can burn out and stop transferring power. Looking at the wire I suspect it is burned. Check to see if you have power on both sides of the link. That's where I would start.

I would use a test light with a probe to check for power on both sides of the link. Where is the ground cable from your battery connected? Do you have a good ground strap from the engine to the body?

Re: Starting issues

Also check the battery cables, the two heavy cables to the starter and the alternator bracket. These corrode internally over time, and if they are over ten years old are suspect. You disturbed them changing the battery and starter, and that may have been enough to finish the job on them.

Ok guys. Let me pick up a power probe and check all these connections that you mentioned. Thanks
