Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm upgraded my 4spd granny tranny to a 700R and my question is about the cooler. Would an auxiliary cooler work as well as one that is built into a rad ? I had my rad rebuild this past fall and it works great. I'd hate to have to switch it.

And I assume that i'll have to change my starter ??

At the top of this page there is a search box that allows for a simple search like;

For the starter you will need either one that mounts to your block, or they do have an expensive adapter plate that can be purchased.

An auxiliary trans cooler alone will work but it is not ideal, especially in colder climates. Running the transmission oil thru a cooler in the radiator helps get the trans oil up to operating temp quicker.

Yes you will need a different starter. One that bolts to the block. There are 2 different starters, depending on which size of flexplate you have. Also don't forget to setup and adjust the TV cable correctly before you drive it. Otherwise you run a very high risk of burning up that trans.

I run a 700r4 in my 50 burb and one in the 65. The burb uses a linear pass through style cooler mounted on the frame rail and capt fab is correct......it doesnt like colder temps. There is a thermal 4th gear protection switch that will not allow it to shift into 4th until trans temp is up. With the rad style cooler you get the warming of the fluid early on.

20,000 +miles and works great.

1st things 1st what engine do you have? What yr is the 700r4 trans? I installed 700r4 trans on my 60 stepper 5 yrs ago and running great.. I can give you a parts break down on how mine was installed..

I just finished putting a 700r4 behind my inline and have around 500 trouble free miles with this cooler: Hayden trans cooler plate 679

I had to change my starter also. I upgraded to the Summit Racing mini starter. It has two different mounting holes for either tooth flexplate. It works great and is surprisingly light weight.

*Side note, the corvette servo upgrade was the simple and best mod to date.
