I was talking to summit racing where i got my drop kit from to see if the hangers would cause this if by chance they was installed wrong he said no but told me "if" my leaf springs was installed backwards I would have this problem can the leafs be installed backwards? any one have a set laying around they could measure or any one know? thanks |

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
Did you put a flip kit in? If so, your flip brackets are likely backwards.

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
Most trucks got 52" springs. They have a centered pin. A stock spring has the same clamps front and back so they can be installed either way. Some drop springs have a clamp configuration that has a front/rear but the axle would still be in the same spot with 52" springs. 56 inch springs you'd know right off. I'm guessing the flip brackets are backwards. Or, if you homemade a flip and used the center of the perch you either need to redrill the perch or cut the driveshaft.

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
I used shackles and hangers to lower the truck when it was done the leafs was not unbolted from the axle, my problem is the yoke is not going in enough its "out" .75 from wear it should be
its stock leafs, i'm the 3rd owner of the truck so thats why i'm asking if they can be installed wrong? |

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
The springs are equal distance (25") front and back of the spring from the spring bolt to the axle. Backwards they'd still measure the same.
What's your pinion angle? If the pinion is pointing down your yoke won't be as deep as it shouild be in the tranny. |

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
pinion angle was never messed with only shackles and hangers, I measured from the leaf spring bolts to the u bolt on the axle front got a 24" distances and the rear got 23.25" distance witch is .75 difference and thats how much the yoke is sticking out

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
Are the hangers symmetrical, or are they left/right specific? If side specific and you have them mixed up...that could be it, as the shackle would play follow the leader, thus moving the axle.

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
Did you tighten the shackles down pre-loaded, or when the truck was on the ground with the weight on them?

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
Your pinion angle would change quite a bit. You didn't change it, the shackle that is about 4" longer than a stocker did. This could be your problem. I thought the shackle/hanger kit I used a few years ago came with shims. I would try shimming it back up.

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
my truck has the same kit and it had my pinion pointing upwards a good bit. so yeah, it does alter the pinion angle therefore making the slip yoke move out more

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
The pinion angle isn't the angle the snout of the rearend has, its the difference of the two angles(driveshaft and snout). If the axle goes up into the body 4" the transmission stays in the same spot the angles will change even if it goes up equal amounts front and rear. Did you buy these leafs from Summit? Do you have a part number? Is it sticking out 3/4" or is it sticking out 3/4" further than it was? Is the wheel fairly centered in the wheelwell?

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
I read your other post where you said your driveshaft had 2.5" of slip yoke showing. Your drive shaft is too short. Even with the .75" you're worried about. Most have 1-1.5". Ask the driveshaft guy what he recommends but $300 for an all new shaft ain't too bad.

Re: leaf springs installed backwards?
the leaf springs them self are stock, the only thing I swapped was the hangers and shackles
I under stand about the pinion angle but i'm not the 1st guy to lower the back this way I've never herd of this, I dont have any drive line vibrations and when I had it all checked out after I lower it about 8.5 years ago axles was fine I know that when you lower the rear it moves the axle forward witch would push "in" the yoke to the trans mission so much that the flip kits move the rear end back 1" |
