Anyone ever risked Earl Shibe?
I'm told good and bad about earl shibe's paint jobs. The classic truck special for 235.00 inside and out sounds pretty tempting.

And in truth it wasn't that bad. At that time his sub $100 prices limited you to about 4-5 colors (not original codes to anything this millenium). I did all my own prep and uassembly work and I can say it wasn't too bad a job. The one's I have seen where they do the prep and shooting stink...very sloppy.

I have seen a few work trucks that were done there, and they looked real nice because the rear window, bumpers, grill and even the dirt and grass in the bed was painted to match LOL. I wouldn't do it, you get what you pay for.

I had them do an old Dodge Dart for me. I did the prep and removal stuff. It looked OK, not show quality, but OK for a driver. They guaranteed it for shine for 5 years. The repainted it free in 3 years. But, you get what you pay for. I wouldn't paint a car myself for what little they charge

I have had two cars painted there. First one sucked, real sloppy. Second one I got real smart and did most of my own prep work and trailered the car down there and actually the job wasnt half bad. Think the paint lasted at least 5 years before I noticed any problems. Think I paid 149.00. So I figured that was not bad. At least I didnt have to look at primer all that time. And I did go with white. Most forgiving color.

no it's not going to be a $5000 custom paint job but for a daly driver/beater you cant beat it

Do your own body work, prep work, and trim removal, and it may be pretty good. A buddy of mine spoke to the painter and offered him a c-note to make it look real good.
Came out awsome...and still cheap too. |

If you are really looking to do it cheap, you might be better off doing it the way longhornmail's friend did!. I would still check out some completed work at that shop.

it all depends on the painter ive seen cars come out of there looking real crappy and others that looked good i like andys idea about tipping the painter and checking to see if hes suffering the withdrawals of a bad hangover before he paints your car lol

I doin't know about a hangover, but some of the best painters around here do much better work under the alcaflunice of inkahale. And I'm not as think as you drunk I am!

You get what you pay for
As other's have said - do you own body, (they'll use as much if not more bondo than paint), prep and trim removal. If you don't remove it they'll paint it. A buddy of mine actually went as far as working out a deal for him to do all the masking. If you pay for the $99 job you get a 99cent finish. They have some better paints and do a better job when you get into the higher price catagories. But overall great for a daily and as said definately not show quality. Macco isn't bad either.

I have compaired a number of Macco jobs compaired to 'ole Earl paint jobs about 10 years ago in high school (I took the vocational school option and was in the Auto Body Class)
I found that Macco didn't put on enough paint on many of there jobs, some were thin enough that you could see the primer sploches through teh paint, while Earl Scheib had plenty of paint on every panel, and on the trim. So Macco will "white wash" your truck, while Earl will paint everything including the windshield. |

cheap paint
Maaco(?) did the paint on my 72 k5 in 92'. I did all the prep work then they painted inside and out for $1k. It looked very good when I put it together, lots of compliments. They were suppost to prime it, but they didn't. 11 years later the stock blue is showing through in places and it's time for new paint.
At the same time I had a nice paint job done on my 55'. I stripped it down and then had it walnut media blasted. A body shop in Los Gatos, Ca. had the Bel Air from August to December for $5k. This car has been garaged and covered and still looks great. If you want it nice, spend the money. |

You get what you pay for. Dont pay much dont expect much. Quality paint costs more than they are charging for the whole paint job. Any fool can paint but it is only the select ones who can leave a mirror finish that will last forever if taken care of. If your looking to paint something to sell quick is one thing but if you plan on keeping it a long time then spend the extra money and have a professional paint job put on it rather than a quickie who is only out to make a quick buck.

While everyone who states that you get what you pay for and quality is not cheap IS right, i want everyone to remember this.
Not everyone can afford top go and have there trucks torn down to the last body piece, and pay some one to stip, massage, prime, paint, wet sand, and buff to a mirror like shine. I would give my left nut to be able to have my truck in one solid color with no scratches, but it just isn't in the cards at this point in my life. As long as you know that your paint job is not going to be the best, and you know that it will need done again one day, a cheap paint job is the way to go. It will have one color paint on all the panels, it will not rust as quickly as it would if it was in that butt ugly primer, and it will make the truck less of an eye sore to your neighbors and you may actually be proud to drive it to a cruise in (let alone a hottie for a date).Don't go in there expecting a show winner, expect a 20 footer. When you find that it is more of a 10 footer, you'll be very happy, and the wife will not kill you for emptying the kids school fund. It sure beats the hell out of owning a truck in no less than 8 colors...not including rust brown. As for colors, we all know that black and near black colors show dents, but what most people do NOT know, is that white shows poor panel fitment. A good color (if either of those two apply to your ride) is a med blue or a med green.(something in that area of colors) I guess red works too, but red is WAY overdone. (IMO) |

I went with maaco and ask then to do the best that they could with the extra prep and paint quailty, also had them remove the front and rear glass (worried about the new rubber shrinking and showing the old color). I knew I wasn't paying for a top quality job but it turned out real nice and am very happy with the result..

Lewi, your truck looks really nice. Mostly what I have heard is their prep work is poor quality. Sometimes, there is orange peal but you might be able sand/but that out. If the vehicle is a daily driver, I'd say give it a try. You might call around to some of the local body shops and see if they have any Earl Shieb specials. They may have a competative level (or slightly higher).

I worked with a girl whose husband was a painter at a local family-owned body shop. He was good, and his wife told me that there were a bunch of good body men/painters at that shop.
Well, the shop was bought by Earl Scheib, but only the name changed - most of the employees stayed. I don't know what the point of that story is, other than maybe it all depends on which one you go to, and who you actually get to shoot your truck. Mike

I had my first car painted by them in 1973, 29.95 did prep myself taped trim to edges forgot tires. Paint is still on there tho oxidized from AZ sun. Paint was as good as the prep but I was just 15 then.
