what kind of temp sending unit is this?

no one at the parts store knows and everything that comes up in their 'puter is not it... nothing I came up with on this forum told me either... it was in the DS head its a 307 from 73 I think..

Trucks with TCS have a sender in the pass. side head. The ( transmission controlled spark) only works when engine is up to operating temp.

It did once have idiot lights.. I changed over to gauges should I get a different temp sender? this one looks nothing like the ones litew8 posted... same pin as the first one but about 3/4" of plastic before the nut..

I would get the right one for the gauge. Here's the problem though, it seems 2 sensors sold at the same time will read differently. I always verify a temp with a check from a infra-red temp gun, just to be sure.

Good call!! Just sucks that I rewired the whole truck with the factory crimping tool from aaw and now have sent it back! now I need a new termination!

It might not look like it from the connector down because it is a revised/modern version - that and the original you have isn't a sending unit, just a switch I think that lights up a bulb. All that should matter is the connector type. If you are saying that the one you have is the original, was connected to a dummy light - and now you have a gauge, then yes - the original is not correct for a 'gauge' and you will need to get one for a gauge. Mine looks like the second one in the pic above, I have a gauge. Research those part numbers beneath in the picture and see what you find.

The web page says they are "sending units" so the first one should be the correct one for you.

As noted above the idiot light sender is just a switch that turns on the warning light. I believe the gauge sender measures resistance to indicate the temperature. The correct sender LOOKS like the one second from left in the picture above. Here's a link to the connector you'll need if you want it to look original.

The green wire for the sender was run in a fabric loom along the intake side of the left valve cover on a SBC, down the front of the head, through a clip on the water pump stud, then back under the exhaust manifold and up to the sender.

EDIT: Here's a picture showing the routing of the black loom/wire. However, I think the clip and stud belong in the lower pump hole.
