Lift hatch hinge repair

Looking for some much needed advice! Scored a nice top with lift gate for 50 bucks at one of those pull it yourself places. Could not beleive there sat a 72 CST complete except the wheels. Well after getting it home realized the metal structure in the hatch is rotton or broken loose. Has anyone repaired this or have any pictures of what it should look like for the hing mounting. Thanks alot!!

Re: Lift hatch hinge repair

Thanks for the link! I had ran across this in my searchs but it does not seem to give much detail on cutting the hatch apart or attaching the halfs back together. Anyone with information on this? Thanks again for the information!

Re: Lift hatch hinge repair

You can cut a hole between the hinge mounts on the upper side as if the hatch was on the truck. That is after your successful at removing gone hatch from the truck. The rusted out mounting plates once de riveted will slide towards the centre and if you cut the whole the right size it will fall out if you turn the hatch upside down. I sell direct replacement re manufactured mounting plates if required as they are difficult to make so I have made a tool that presses them out to identical to original only a slightly heavier gage There is no need to separate the two halves as it is tricky to do so with causing damage elsewhere but it has been done and no two hatches in my experience have seperated alike. But although you can carefully do the fibreglass repairs suscessfully without dismantling. You will need lots of patients starting with one layer of fibre glass and building up from there especially around the windows radiaii the first coat of fibreglass should be waxed resin and after its cured it needs to be dewaxed with acetone before building layers
I do have a couple hatch shells that are nearly rebuilt should you require a replacement hatch. My hatches include new mounts installed no windows installed makes shipping possibly tolerable . Windows install easily with shims .Good luck !
