Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

I sold my 70 Blazer before the market really took off. Now finding a similar vehicle to replace it is likely going to cost me several thousand dollars more for something in comparable condition. It's funny how the car market works, but these trucks are just cool tough vehicles and even with inflated prices are much more reasonable than muscle cars from the same era.

Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

I saw this back in the mid-late 80's with British motorcycles. 'Money' magazine did an article on 'investing in British motorcycles'- every yuppie simpleton in DC (where I lived at the time) would quiz me about my beater Norton 850 (ugly as a stone hammer, and just as reliable), I had post-it notes left on the tank- 'want to sell this bike? Call Snotrag @ 202-IMA-SIMP'. It really pissed off all us real enthusiasts. I would ask these guys how many other bikes they owned- and I would revel in their discomfort at having to admit to not even having an M/C endorsement on their DL, let alone being able to ride one! I told them that we 'Norton' guys didn't sell our bikes- we let someone buy them! I didn't sell it until a rotten divorce demanded it. And it went to one of the guys in my club, and he's still got it! The trucks are similar- a thing valuable to its aficionados, in a quantity not measured in money- the dilettantes can never know what that is.

I was just fine with loving and driving them my whole life whether anyone else liked or owned them or not.

Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

I'm glad I got '71 C10 last year, before the market became artificially inflated.

I bought mine simply because I wanted a pickup truck again, and figured if I was going to get a used truck that I was going to work on, I'd get one that was easier to work on with plenty available parts. There was that "cool" factor I wanted to work into the deal too, but it wasn't the deciding factor.

In fact, this website is the reason I went with my c10, my mechanical skills are rusty and I don't know a lot of "car" people, so I knew I was going to need all the help and guidance I could get. Besides, I've never been a F*rd or M*par fan.

This just might be the first time I've made an investment that has gone up in value, so quickly. That's kind of fun. Seeing the c10 in my driveway, I have already had a few people stop asking if I want to sell it. One guy got a little mad when I said "not interested", saying he hadn't seen me do anything with it and that he just might steal it. Idiot. Anyway, I'm still collecting parts, pondering and planning.

Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

Here's what's going to happen now since the 67-72 trucks are still pretty plentiful. All the scum bag flippers are going to start snatching them up and putting on Earl Scheib paint jobs clad with Hong Kong fooy repop parts. And we will be seeing a lot more over priced rolling lip stick turd trucks.

Bummer.

Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

Not everyone has seen it... I was offered $4,500 for mine a few days ago. WTF?

I told him no way, I'd want a grand for every year I've owned it.

He asked how many years I've owned it.

I said 18.

He said that's way too much.

I said I guess it's not for sale then

You should have acted over excited and told him to run to the bank and pull out the cash, and when he left for the money, just leave

I'm thinking this guy thinks it's worth more than it is. I guess i could be wrong, but rare doesn't equal valuable.

It's worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it.

He was actually a really nice guy. I stopped at a muffler shop to see if they had a couple exhaust manifold bolts for my Mustang's 289 and he really liked my truck. Gave me the bolts/studs I needed for free. Looks like they do good work too... and I coincidentally need my exhaust redone on the truck...

I'd say mine is worth around 8K, that's what I think I could actually sell it for.

That truck would be great for hauling that 9' plywood in. That guy is nuts, he will be sitting on that truck for a loooong time!

I wonder if he assumed it was one of the flipped ones like jeffahart is talking about, was he checking out the truck real good or just throwing a price out there right away like a joker?

Either way I still think it's cool for these old trucks to be recognized, as they should, they're a part of american history. Too bad that article groups them up with civics lol.

Re: Why some people think its worth more than it is

We can't rescue them all, but we can save what we can.

I paid only $500.00 for my truck back in September of 2003. Someone I knew was going to part it out for the motor, but when I saw that it was a complete, running vehicle I quickly gave him my five bills AND my rusted out '74 GMC 20 and drove the '68 home.

Three years later I was offered $3000.00 for it. I turned it down without even a thought.
Five years later I rebuilt the motor because the left cylinder head had developed a crack between the $# and #7 cylinders.
Last year I was offered $5000.00 for it. Yes, there was some thought, but considering that I knew what was in this truck and the fact of what I might be paying to buy another one down the road, I quickly decided not to sell it.
I consider it a part of the family.
