1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
Hey guys,
I am new here so forgive me if I ask a lot or ask stupid questions. I recently received my great grandpa's 1955 1st pickup that he bought new (a dealers demo) in 1955. I have been looking to make sure everything matches but can't get a fix on the transmission. My family says it has never been worked on but the numbers may say different. It is a 3 on the tree and the serial number on the trans is M8C18. That to me translates to a Muncie built on March 18, 19?8. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't answer your question---I doubt very many can. But--Welcome to the forum.

While we're waiting for one of our more astute members to give you an answer, how about some pics of the truck?

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
Its rough and mostly in parts. I will try to upload a couple though. My dad had someone working on it and it all fell through so I am trying to pick up where they screwed us.

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
you are right, if it is non-syncro 1st gear it will be 48 or 58, first year for syncro first was 68. Not a particulary strong transmission and hard to find parts for.

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
Sorry to hear there's a jerk involved. If the "restorer" is local, consider small claims court. Looks like he was doing a great job (NOT). I hope you got most of the parts back.

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
So, OrrieG, it is possible that the serial number would be that early? Not sure on the syncro, is there a way to check? Either way the years do not match for the truck. It should be a mid to late 54 built transmission. As for the "restorer", DransportGarage, I wasn't involved and its been quite sometime. We did get all the parts back and I have been working on taking it apart. I would like Possum Holler Garage down in Sawdust, TN to take it and just finish it right, but that is a bit out of my price range. Thanks for the replies. I do appreciate having a place to go for questions, thoughts and rants.

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
So what are your plans for the truck. Whatever your plans, there are plenty of nice people here that know a lot and will help you. There are no dumb questions. The dumb thing to do is start working on some part of your truck you know nothing about, without getting some help here. Best wishes and welcome.

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
post a picture of the whole transmission left side and tail stock. Looks to be a nice truck to start with. Can you keep the paint? Rub it down with some CLR or evaporust and see what it looks like

Re: 1955 1st Chevy Rebuild
Handfull 54 I plan to put it back original since it was my great grandpas. Had it just been a project I may have made some changes, but its a sentimental thing. dwcsr I will get a pic before dark and post it. I am not sure of the paint. My great grandpa had it painted at some point. It was originally the darker blue. He worked for the US Forest Service and used the truck for that a lot so I assumed it just needed painted from the woods. Daze57 thank you, and I am beginning to see that this forum is a lot like my neighborhood. I live in East Tennessee, so everyone is very friendly and helpful. I love it. Born and raised here in the mountains and wouldn't change for anything.
