What are wreckers going for?

I stumbled onto what may be a good deal. I found a wrecker in really good shape in a yard I'd not been to before. I didn't figure it was for sale, I was just kinda joking when I asked the guy what he'd take for it.

"25 hundred, but the brakes don't work" he says.

I wish I would have taken more pictures. I think it's a '71. He says everything else works fine, and that he used it not long ago to pull a motor.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

I would say that's a killer deal if you want a wrecker!

Re: What are wreckers going for?

not a bad deal, is it a big block truck? A/C ? I can tell it has a Holmes 440 wrecker unit. If its in good shape I'd jump on it. I wouldn't part with mine... Coop

Re: What are wreckers going for?

It has a small block. I don't think it had A/C. I just gave it a quick once-over and popped the hood. It had last been registered in '08. I'm going to stew on it for awhile. I've always thought it would be fun to have one, but I never really thought one would come my way. I'll have to go back and take a better look, but it's a hundred and fifty miles from home so I'll have to wait until next time work sends me that way. A couple of weeks, probably.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

I think it's worth it. I see the mirror is a later one. You'd want to look for what was repaired before painted. I sold my '71 for that much

I had a guy low ball me on some stuff I was selling and I was so offended, I nearly told him to GTFO.

If either party is offended, the deal if off. Don't be offensive.

Give the truck a serious look and then make your offer. Remember, bartering is an art: good art is treasured and bad art gets trashed.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

Just to clarify, the first rule of deal making is don't insult the seller. If you know the value make a reasonable offer and work from there.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

While it's wise to try to buy all things for as little money as possible,it is just as wise to offer a price that will at least initiate a negotiation. There's definitely more to making offers than "give ya 10 bucks". Besides, the question was,"What are wreckers going for?",not,"How much should I offer?".

Yeah, I really didn't have any idea what it would be worth, but I figured a lot more than the 25 he said. Really, that's little more than scrap price. And since value is in the eye of the holder, that's why I ask the way I do.

I have a friend here in town, though, that runs the local wrecker service. He has several, all the way to semi wreckers. And he has an awesome '72 short wide, to boot. Anyway, he recently lost a daughter to a car accident, so I told him about it, in case he needed something to take his mind off of it all, restoring a wrecker like the one he had back in '72.

If he don't want it, I'll make it's whereabouts known here in case anyone else is interested.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

I have a Century 412 (hydraulic boom, twin winch and wheel lift) sitting on a 79 C30. I've been looking for a 72 c30 to put my wrecker unit on it.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

Make an offer that is appropriate, based on condition and his asking price, if those two numbers are close. If the price is way high, just thank him for his time, walk away and don't even bother with an offer. He won't be offended and will most likely start throwing out numbers if he wants to really make a deal and is serious about selling.

If the truck is relatively rust free, and runs, it is worth his asking price IMO.

.....this my friends....is exactly 'the right answer'.
Knowing where to begin....is indeed an art....and many men have no clue where it is.

Re: What are wreckers going for?

I think it would be cool driving around town, the mpg cant be any worse than my regular 69 pickup. who knows, drive around in the winter time when its snowing and you could probably pick up some loose change pulling people out of the ditch as they're on their way to work...as long as you don't pull their bumper off.....
