72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

I asked this question a while back and was told that 72 chevy blazers came with side post terminals. Today I was told by a very well known chevy enthusiast that he assured me that they came with top posts. Does anyone know for sure which way they came so I can get the correct cables and battery? Thanks

Side posts. Photo shows OEM cables in my 72 K1500 GMC pickup but K5s were similarly equipped. Member RogerKoop makes some very nice OEM-style repro battery cables - I have a set of his in my Blazer.

My '72 C/10 also has side post.

I do like running dual terminal 34/78 batteries like DeadheadNM has. It makes it easier to jump start Fords when I come across them on the side of the road.

Re: 72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

My '72 Jimmy was originally side posts. I am not a fan and it now has 2ga welding cable with copper lugs on the ends and marine terminals on a top post AGM battery. (Actually a pair of them with a factory auxiliary battery tray I added.)

Re: 72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

I'd ask who cares? Evolution has ridded us of side post batteries for a reason.
Side post batteries are crap because threads in lead is a brain damaged concept.
If I have a side terminal battery I'll put top post style adapters on it and never remove them.
I'd replace side terminal cables with good top post cables.

We aren't usually trying to win originality awards with these trucks.

The OP simply wanted to know what the trucks were equipped with by GM. He didn't ask for your opinion regarding side vs. top posts. You may not care for originality in these trucks but many of "us" do.

Re: 72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

Did this change for 72? I have yet to look in my 72 service manual but my 70 manual shows a top post battery as well. Does not show it pictured in a blazer, just pictures of the batteries themselves.

My 70 is original and they are top, I've been thinking of starting a thread for differences in each year of production. The 69-70 are a bread of their own!!

72 trucks have side posts for sure from GM (so does my 1999 suburban)

Well, no one asked for your opinion either, but there it is.
Not sure who your misquoted us is, but bad design is bad design.
If you choose to use a bad design for the sake of originality, that's fine. Chances are you (and the mysterious us) will probably be replacing batteries before their time due to stripped threads in lead.

Re: 72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

I dropped my long box end (1/2") on my top posts after reinstalling a charged battery in my Blazer. Guess what - "BOOM" as it arced between the posts. My ears rang for 3 days and I couldn't find my wrench for a week. The smoke set off the fire alarm too! It was nasty. Personally I am one for side terminals and didn't know my K5 was supposed to have them. Jumping tops is easier, but I can attest to the danger of them as well. Also, there is nothing wrong with opinions, they make us all think. My opinion. G.

Re: 72 K5 battery top posts or side posts

since i ordered my 72 new.. I can tell you 100% for sure that they came with side post. And I prefer side post...Less corosion..and always stay tight. still using the original cables. Matter of fact, I've changed all my other old cars to side post also.. Only thing i've ever found a hassel with them is some times it's hard to get jumper cables on them.

And just why would you be removing and reinstalling the battery connections so many times that you risk damage to the terminals? I've had this truck for over three years and only removed the connections once. Unless, perhaps, you just like to practice. The possibility is there but anyone who is on this board - that mysterious "us" you asked about - is probably competent enough to do things correctly.
