Frame Question????

I bought a truck as a project a while back. Getting ready to work on the frame and ran into an issue. The truck is titled as a 67. The frame is 5 lug, with leaf springs. Guessing it is a 71 or 72?? I was going to order a front end rebuild kit but 71 and 72 are different part numbers from 67-70. Is there any way to be sure what frame I have?? Thanks in advance, this site has been super helpful so far!!!!!

Re: Frame Question????

you need to locate the numbers on the frame, 1st is where the power steering would be on top of the rail and the second under the cab area on the side of the rail on the outside. You will have to look for numbers on the spindles to help decode the front end. Plus pictures help.

Re: Frame Question????

Should be on the top of the driver's side frame rail I believe between the power steering and upper control arm. I don't remember if the whole vin is on there but one of the 1st digits should be a 7 if it's a '67 frame. Sorry going off memory.

Re: Frame Question????

Also most 67 frames don't have dimple to install power steering box. The frame will be straight in that area between the bolt holes, but remember some 68 frames will Also be like this....

Re: Frame Question????

You have to remember, a popular upgrade for these trucks is to go five lug by swapping in a '71 or later rearend and front spindles. I would just buy for both, then return the ones you don't need. Most of the parts that differ are only $20 - $30 bucks, so it wouldn't be a big hit. It's alot harder to swap a frame than to swap rearends and front suspension. This is what I did on my '67 lwb. Total cost this way is $300ish for the major components.

Not necessarily conclusive , I own a 67 and a 68 , the 68 came with both power brakes and power steering , the 67 came with power steering and manual brakes . If you are working on a GMC they all had leaf springs I believe

Re: Frame Question????

It is a GMC and I also thought they were all leaf in the rear. Only numbers I can find on the frame are 231 on the front passenger side. Got more info. Truck was once a mud drag rig. Guy I bought it from said the frame was swapped before he bought it. He's in his early 30's and bought the truck when he was 14. Which parts of the rebuild kit are different??

Re: Frame Question????

Here's where the no. is located. You should find a number then a letter and a sequential run of the s.n. first number is yr model the letter is the assembly plant. 1Zxxxxx would be a 71 yr model assembled at fremont ca.

Re: Frame Question????

Here are the only numbers I can find on my frame. I did call CPP and found out the tie rods are different size so I'm gonna pull one off and hit the parts store. Did try to google the numbers I found on the frame but no luck. Do the numbers mean anything??

Re: Frame Question????

Those dont mean anything. Some think they may be part numbers of the frame rails. You need to find the numbers that John pointed out is his pic, Or if the frame is bare it is on the top of the driver side frame rail between the cab mounts too. It will be smaller and not as deep as those you pictured. Grab a wire brush and start searching.

Post a couple pics if the whole frame too. I see a 73+ prop valve and brake lines on the front cross member.

Re: Frame Question????

I could never find mine, have to try again.

Someone above thought GMCs only had leaf springs. My Dad's 68 GMC had coils with an overloader half-leaf I believe. But it was coils and trailing arms for sure.

The following is for 1/2 and 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive.
GMC trucks came standard with leaf springs,, coils optional. Chevrolet was coils standard with leaf springs optional .
