Steering radius on '68
Hi everyone. I just picked up a '68 c10 and one of the main things I want to fix is the steering radius and how loose the steering feels. I'm not sure if it's how it drives but I can be driving straight and turn the steering wheel left/right and the truck doesn't really respond. Is it because the steering gearbox needs to be replaced? Also anything I can do on the radius, it is especially a pain when parking or doing 3 point turns.

I know some experienced members will chime in. I also have a 68 that had "loose" steering.
I cannot comment on the turning radius, but my steering wheel was very loose, and it turned out to be the pitman arm, once replaced my steering felt more responsive. |

Check to make sure your drag link is not installed backwards, then go from there to check if you have any slop in your steering linkage and if its the box itself that is loose it can be tightened.

The most likely cause is worn steering components. If it's a manual box, that is the first thing I would check. Have someone rock the wheel back and forth while you watch the Pitman arm. There is some adjustment to the box but at best it's a bandaid.Check also for looseness in the wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and ball joints. If the steering box is loose, consider going to a power steering set up.
