1962 2WD conversion to 4x4 - use '62 torsion bars for IFS?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if it's possible to retain the original torsion bars to convert a 1962 C20 to an IFS 4x4 (using parts from a 88 and up 4x4)? Or even to replace the '62 bars with the later model torsion bars?

Or is the only way to do the conversion is to swap out the whole front drivetrain with a solid axle and leaf springs?

Only way i see using the 88 up ifs is to cut the front clip off one and weld it on your frame or use the whole trucks frame and put your body over it.

Thanks andrewmp6. Yeah, I understand options but I'm trying to figure out if the torsion bar setup on the '62 is worth keeping at all when converting to 4x4. Kinda seems like it might be an advantage? Unless measurements are not the same between 60-62 and 88-up.

Just depends how your going to use the truck and if your willing to do the work it will take to make the newer ifs 4x4 front to fit and work.I would go leaf springs solid axle its simple and easier swap to do.

I have no experience or actual knowledge on the subject, but my gut tells me if you were to undertake an IFS 4X4 conversion, you would probably be best off using the torsion bar set up from the donor vehicle.

Why would you want ifs? A solid axle is stronger and cheaper

seems like a step in the wrong direction. and a whole hell of a lot of work for no real useful gain.

ifs rides better, has higher ground clearance, but with the ifs you may need to convert to a rack and pinion steering also and seeing an ifs 62 would be awesome although solid axle would be easier
