Ash tray / Cup holder

As I am getting prepared to take the 72 on a journey from Michigan to Oregon, it occurred to me that I do not have any cup holder.

Since I work at Meritor for the day job, I drew up a sketch and had the machinist widdle out this piece of billet aluminum on the Haas CNC mill.

It attaches to the front of the ash tray with two 10-32 machine screws. I did have to modify the ash tray a little and drill some holes but I figure the mod was easy to change back to original if I ever decide too.

I have already thought of some improvements that will make it more user friendly but for now, it will serve its purpose just fine.

Very nice work. I like the design. What improvements have you thought about? Would this work with a manual trans? Safe travel for you, Bruce

It as is will not hold a bottle of water. I was thinking of making a small braket that would hang down with a 90 degree bend that would stop the bottle from fallen though. This design was meant to hold a tapered cup like shown in the photo. Not sure if the throw of a shifter would hit it or not.

Thank you for the kind words,
Tom

Les, I have the program for the Haas CNC which means that anyone who has a Haas CNC mill could use my program and make these up.

I like the way you think

That's the same thing I did!
Only I cut mine on the amada laser out of stainless.
Mine actually slides in like the ash tray so removeal of the ash try is necessary.

Very nice.

Thank you. I am sure there are 186,000 ways to accomplish it and they are all unique. I just wanted something that would hold a cup instead of my right hand

Got any photos of your set up? Where is Backwoods Oregon?
Love to see them

Take care,
Tom

Re: Ash tray / Cup holder

Thats pretty cool. Ash trays are a dime a doz, a guy could swap back and forth with a factory one for shows or short drives and such. Keep one or the other in the glove box. Just thinking out loud for my own needs. Good idea..

Re: Ash tray / Cup holder

I would be more worried about not having a radio for that trip!

All kidding aside, that is a really nice cup holder and I would definitely buy one if it had the 90* stopper so you could put a bottle or can in there.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I am working on getting more made soon. The 90* stopper will be something that I will make available and even want it on mine. It will be removable in case it is not needed.

I will try and get a measurement soon for the 4 speed guys to see if there would be shifter throw interference.

Oh and we will have something that makes noise or music on the trip. Not sure what yet

Have a good weekend all,
Tom

very nice Tom!

.....but when you leave Michigan, the roads are smooth enough that you can flip the glove box open and use the original cup holders....

Happy Trails!

Thank you Dave,

Yes it is going to be nice to get away from the salt infected Michigan roads. I know I have longer than normal arms like a orangutan but not that long . That would be a stretch over there.

I am looking forward to the adventure out West.

Take care,
Tom
