Got to use the truck off-roading and towing today (bought a '76 chassis)
I saw a '76 3/4 ton chassis for sale for $200, so I thought I'd pick it up; disk brake front end, another 14 bolt rear with good leaf springs, some extra wheels, etc.
So I hooked up the trailer and drove the 40 miles or so to Rome, GA. No problem at all running 60-65MPH with the 4.10 gears (still need to kick the exhaust out in front of the rear tire to get rid of the loud droning, though). The truck then really came in handy dragging the chassis out--and I do mean dragging! Both rear wheels and the right front were locked up, so rolling was out of the question. The chassis was also in a bad spot, so a little thought was required. I turned around and unhooked the trailer, then used the fabulous low first and reverse of the SM420 and the grip of the remolded mud tires to climb up the gravel hill where the chassis was and play tractor. I drug the chassis down the hill and behind the trailer for loading, then drove back around and hooked the trailer back up. It would drag it along at idle, which was also kind of neat. Easy work for the junkyard work truck! |

Glad to see somebody snatched that thing up. $200 is dirt for that!

Thanks guys. I also like the hubcaps; adds a little bit of much-needed contrast IMO.
And yes, this truck is still a truck. |

Man! Your truck is cool.
Longbed Stepsides were considered so dorky when I was young. Now they are so nostalgic as a grandpa's old worktruck. Love it!

The more I look at your truck the more I think about not parting out the 63 long step

Re: Got to use the truck off-roading and towing today (bought a '76 chassis)
Thanks! Planning on some more stuff in the very near future; the rebuilt 292 to replace the 250 should be going in shortly, the nice and tight disk brake front end, and possibly a 3.73 geared 14 bolt with the HD dually springs (supposed to be going to pick up some 3.73 gears and other misc. stuff for $20 Monday).
I'm also going to take the cab off to fix the rust/damage and put C10 cab mounts on it to replace the shot-out C20/C30 sheer-type mounts soon (after I fix the Impala I bought so I can drive it while the truck is in pieces ). |
