Encountered a big problem with suspension..need help

So I was in the middle of jacking up my 68 c10 to chnage outthe pitman arm and noticed the grommet or flange that goes around the top of the shock broke off and the previous owner let the shock sit in the hole like that and now has flared out a bigger hole.

now my question is..i will eventually chnage into a lowering spindle and do a disc brake conversion. will the new spindle and conversion require differnt hole mounts? do i need to fix this or will it require a new hole anyways?

thanks

I would say fix it. My 71 is lowered and it uses the same mounting spot.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

You can use a shorter shock when you lower it and weld up that hole and install a new shock stud, or, you can use the same size shocks and use new upper shock mounts which weld to the frame and raise above the frame, are much stronger, look ‘custom’ and are a better way in the long run.

a very common problem with these trucks// take a large washer and weld it in place to get the shock functional again

I agree, weld it up. Then get a set of shock relocators.

I bought a set of them and never used them. They are almost impossible to install if your not going to take the motor and fender's off the truck. I got mine off E bay. Performance something.
I was going to bolt mine on though. Drilling the holes was going to be impossible. I'm still planning to use them just going to wait until I have to take the front end apart.

You could always fab up something similar that will install without removing everything, like this http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...postid=4730005 More than one way to skin a cat. I had the same issue welded a piece of metal in there and drilled a new hole. Not too hard to do, and works just fine.

how did you get the metal plate on there? isnt it on at an angle of the frame?

Re: Encountered a big problem with suspension..need help

I had my motor out and placed a piece of 1/4" steel on the inside of the frame and welded it in. Then welded up the outside to the 1/4" filling in the gap. Then I put some brackets off a 4x4 that go to the outside end of the shock bolt to further solidify the whole mess.
I am not sure why GM didn't do this to start with but I think it's darn solid now!
