HELP !!! trans id.

Ok i just bought a motor and trans that i wanted for my 66. The guy told me that it was a 250 inline 6 with a 700r4 trans. but i dont know! Can some one help me? I tried looking up the cast numbers but not finding out much. so here is what i do know.

Cast number on side of case 8663548
Has a "K" on bell houseing
also a MD 8 on side.
Aslo has the arch on side of case through top cooling line

Has a square plug on drivers side toward rear (4 prongs)
On passenager side a cable running up to carb ( was told it was kickdown)
Under tail shaft is a simi circular thing with another 2 prong plug.

When i bought it guy told me it had cable style for speedo. well i cant find it. he said he had it in a 66 this is why i bought it for mine.

Also cast number on side of engine block is 3921968 is this a 250?

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

It sounds like an 8os 4X4 K case 700r4 It has a throttle pressure cable not a kickdown cable. You will need a adapter on the throttle linkage to properly run the trans.Bowtie overdrives sells them for a Quadrajet 4 BBL. I do not know which others they may have. They have a cool display that shows the trans pressure valve with the adapter and without. If you run without it will in time ruin your trans since it is not applying full pressure to the trans. The 700r4 was originally on a 1987 vehicle with fuel injection so the throttle geometry is different. The K case is said to be stronger and usually had a cast aluminum bell housing lower cover with supports that ran to a plate under the motor mounts . This helped support the trans bell housing.

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

Yes that does sound like a 700R4, and the good K case at that. However that 'kickdown' cable is not a kickdown cable. That is the TV cable. If it is not connected properly to the carb linkage and the trans pressures not correctly adjusted, that trans is either burned up or close to it. Not very many people correctly setup the TV cable on a I6 engine since it is a bit difficult. To my knowledge, it has to be fabricated sinced no one makes the kits for the I6.

The semi-circular piece under the tailshaft with the 2 prong plug is for the electric speedo.

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

The guy i got it from said it shifted through all gears and overdrive great. guess he could have been lying about just to sell, ill try to take a pic of the cable hooked to carb and post. im hoping this wasnt a waste of money. both motor and trans was supposed to have been just rebuilt.

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

The engine comes up as a 1966-76 230 or 250 they both share the same casting numbers. The plug on the rear of the trans is a speedometer drive. I believe you can get an earlier gear driven adapter to replace it with. The trans could be new and as a core is worth about $ 250. I have them rebuilt by a professional and as a carry in it runs me about $650. If it is built correctly it will probably be fine. I do not know what you paid but if you decide to install it you should use a rear gearing of 373 for a good all around gearing.

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

You will probably need to get one custom fabricated to fit the six cylinder engine since the 700R4 would have been behind a 4.3 V6 or V8 engine. Here is an article to give you a better understanding of the operation of the cable. http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php This is on the Bowtie Overdrives web site.

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

You can put standard speedo gears in that transmission to hook up your speedo cable with out having to use any electrical adapters

Re: HELP !!! trans id.

I agree. That's not even close to what it should be.

I got scared looking at that... Pull the pan off the tranny and look inside. The fluid should be pinkish, if it looks like blood then there has been alot of heat going on.
