What is it and how do I fix it??

My 12 year old daughter and I started out this mornig to go quad riding, loaded up the trailer and off we were.....until. I started smelling some electrical burning smell so we stopped and checked it out. What I found was a black box under the dash slightly above and to the drivers side of the gas pedal. I'm thinking it is the wiper motor but not sure, I know it was so hot when I touched it, it burnt my finger (then i disconnected the battery). I was towed back home and here i am. how do I fix it and where do I get the parts?

Check out your ground's and trace any wire's that may have melted.. Bad ground's are notorius(sp) on older truck's.. If it is the wiper motor they are not too hard to replace..Good luck

I found a picture on "Chevy Duty" and it looks like it's the wiper motor that I burnt myself on. Do you need to take off the outside body panel (name of it ??) with the slots in it, or can it be done from the inside? What would be the cause of the heat with it turned off. It started smoking also. Could it be a faulty switch that coused the problem to begin with?

R & R on the motor isn't too hard.

First, reach through the slats in the cowl with a flat-bladed screwdriver and pop the clip holding the two wiper arm links to the shaft in the center. Slip the links off the shaft while making note of which one is on top.

Under the dash--and this is the hard part because you have to be a contortionist to do this without pain and strain--there are three cap screws (3/8 heads, IIRC) holding the motor assembly to a sheet metal "cup" welded to the inside of the plenum. Remove the wire connectors and the ubbe hoses from the pump manifold, and then remove the three screws.

The motor assembly will probably remain in place because oif the sticky goo used to cement the fiber gasket to it and the sheet metal. A moderate pull will bring it on down (twist slightly to get the transmission crank through the hole.

Reinstall by reversing the steps.

While you have it out, note that the pump is mounted to the motor base plate. Remove it (unless you luck out and the new one you buy has the pump on it: the pump is an additional $40 or so)). You might want to put a rebuild kit in the pump while the whole thing is on the bench, since your aching back is telling you that you don't want to do this again in the near (or even distant) future.

If its the motor

Hello,
Not mine to sell, but thought about you when I saw it. If its the problem, this may be an option.

Think that is a seller who has some bad customer service. Be wary of that guy. Was a thread about him some time ago.

thanks for your help on this and I was very worried about a bar-b-q when i pulled over even for a while after I had disconnnected the battery with the smoke coming out..
How about the question as to why would there be power to it without it being turned on?

If you need your truck, you should be able to unplug it, and run your truck with out any problems...the fuse to the motor is to the far right below the flasher relay, or the the far left above the flasher relay....I think there are two diff kinds of fuse boxes
Being that it seems to be by itselfs you should be fine until it rains or you get another motor

Thanks again, It's not my daily driver so I don't have rush it. So is flat out a shorted wire that needs to be found outside of the moter itself? Or is it whithin the motor ? I do most of the work on the truck myself but electrical problems freak me out.

Well, I can help you find a short if there is one. But you need a test light, and I need to see were the wires disconnect. From my watching a good electrician, i'll try my best to help you from here!!

Lewi,

It's hard to say exactly what the problem is. Simplest test is to disconnect the motor and see if you still have current flowing.

The motor has power any time the key is on for the park feature. [Thats what returns the wipers to the same place no matter where you turn them off] If the motor was hot enough to burn you it's a pretty sure bet it's toast.

Hey that's what I was wondering, whether it had power all the time. I'll go ahead and check the motor once I have it out and replace it. Longhornmail, that is what it looks like although I can't see it from the angle you've taken this picture, to much junk in the way...

One more thought, Why wouldn't I have blown a fuse prior to the motor burning up?

You'r fuse may be coated with foil from a pack of smokes or chewing gum. Very common road side repair. Some times it stops raining and you'd forget the rapair was ever done and then sold like that. A nail or screw is another road side repair for blown fuses. None of these repairs would blow out when the load gets to be too high.
Just a theory.
