Removing the Transmission crossmember help

We are trying to take the transmission out of a 1972 c10 to take it somewhere to be rebuilt. So far everything but the down shift cable that goes into the pan has been removed. It just won't come off the little catch( I think that's what's holding it in?) So we have decided to take the pan off. To do this we needed access to the 2 bolts holding the pan on that are blocked by the cross member. All the bolts have been removed from it and it is loose but after trying to tap it out of the way, it just keeps pivoting where the transmission sits on it.

Is there some trick that helps getting it out?

Thanks

Re: Removing the Transmission crossmember help

The kickdown cannot be accessed through the pan. It comes in from the top of the transmission body and is "J" or "S" hooked to the linkage in the transmission. Just unhook it from above at the carb and corresponding bracket and bring the kickdown cable out with the transmission.

To move the crossmember you have to put a hunk of thick plywood under the tranny between the tranny pan and a floor jack and raise the transmission a tad. Once the transmission tailshaft bolts are out of the crossmember, you can remove the crossmember bolts from the frame and knock it rearward with a BFH.

Ok, thanks. I'll go have a look near the carb.

Re: Removing the Transmission crossmember help

All the bolts are out and the cross member is still just rotating around the center of where it touches the transmission on the rubber like(???) mount.

Any suggestions? Jack it up higher?

are you sure the bolts are out of the mount? if so, jack up on the trans a bit to put pressure, and then drive a chisel between the mount and the x-member, may just be bonded together a bit.

How far is it safe to jack it up?

Re: Removing the Transmission crossmember help

Something is still holding it to the mount. Use an awl to see if you can poke into each hole and verify they're both clear.... at least one sounds like its still there.

In fact, if the transmission is rotating relative to the crossmember, then you know its one bolt exactly. If the trans and crossmember rotate as a unit relative to the frame, then its more than one most likely.

Otherwise maybe there's an alignment lug on the trans (honestly don't remember) to mount interface and you need to jack it up an additional inch to get that out and clear.

We got it, just had to cut through the "rubbery" adhesive between the 2 and it gave way Now it is loose and now we can't get it out. We started running it back but it ran into an exhaust hangar bracket before it got back far enough. Any trick on how to get it all the way out or is there enough room already to pull the transmission off the torque converter?

You should be able to knock one side back towards the motor and the cross member will drop out. I am not positive but it seems to me I remember one of the sides of the cross member had a cut corner so you could twist it to get it out. I could be wrong, but I do know knock one side towards the front and the other towards the rear and it should come out

Actually, that might have been a different vehicle. I just looked at the pics from my build and I think you just have to beat the hell out of it to get it out
