Re: 292 Chevy Had a Bad Day!!!

It was full of oil and water. It was running perfect 10 minutes before. Now the truck has a GM Performance 325 h.p. crate motor. The truck is a P30 van and is way to big of a truck for a six Banger.....

Re: 292 Chevy Had a Bad Day!!!

Well I turn a 454 6,500 rpm's with a blower in a boat. It has four bolt mains, forged crank, forged pistons and dimple rods. I have run it about ten years without ever having a hick-up. That being said if it came apart id say I got my moneys worth out of it.

The 292 six is a different story. Last year I had one in the same truck. For whatever reason it got hot. It dropped about four exhaust seats. It also scored one cylinder like someone was grinding on it with a grinder. So my 292 days are over...between all these problems and the ex/intake manifold leaks I am not a fan of those motors. Only picture I could find of the truck.

Re: 292 Chevy Had a Bad Day!!!

I can also relate…I once removed my camshaft out the top of my Pontiac block. 9K RPMs, valve spring failure, hung a valve, backfired through the supercharger.

Re: 292 Chevy Had a Bad Day!!!

Long stroke + higher rpm = high piston velocity (and corresponding high bearing loads).

Yep, although I think Mickey Thompson took a little more calculated approach to his.

When I raced my first 194 L6 in the early 1980s, I ended up with a couple of windows in the block just like Dan's 292. There were also some interesting bulges in the push rod covers on the other side.

Re: 292 Chevy Had a Bad Day!!!

No, I think this guy wins...he literally runs over the top half of the engine.

Never really heard anything bad about 292's, though. They screamed wide-open in all the trucks they came in and got a great reputation for reliability. No bad things to say about my own inline sixes, either.

I would just put a piece of plexi-glas on there and then next time you'll be able to see what's going on in there...
I really hate that for that 292...
