reverse lights wont stay on unless i wiggle the shifter

My reverse lights work, but they won't stay on when I put my truck into reverse. I have to hold the shifter a little to the left of R to have the reverse lights stay on. When I let off on the shifter and let it fall where it does naturally...the lights go off.....the shift indicator line up pretty much perfectly with all the gear indicator marks....is there an adjustment I can do to make the reverse lights stay on at all times when the truck is in reverse gear?

I have a TH350 automatic BTW

Thanks,

Try adjusting the neutral safety switch on the top of the column near the firewall. Loosen the two small hex head screws and move the switch SLIGHTLY to one side and tighten. If it doesn't work, move it the other direction.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I'm gonna try to work on it tomorrow morning.

You could replace it, make sure to get it it in the excact same spot. If it still does it try adjusting it as Firstowner69 said!

My truck does this. It's a 3 OTT. I have to hold the lever up a bit.

I'll try this method also (after I get it running of course).

Yeah more than likely yours (neutral saftey switch) just needs to slide over some

There's a switch on top of the base of the steering column, down by the firewall. Mine did the same thing till I took it apart and cleaned the contacts, works perfect now

This. ^^^

You don't need to replace the switch, as it obviously works. It needs to be adjusted.

Re: reverse lights wont stay on unless i wiggle the shifter

UPDATE :

So I adjusted my NSS as suggested and voila! Works perfect now!

The only thing is the screws on the NSS didn't seem to really snug up. I didn't want to strip anything so I just left it as tight as I was comfortable with. It's not loose by any means, so we'll see if it holds.

Thx guys!!

We kind of figured that's what it was. Glad you got it fixed!

Re: reverse lights wont stay on unless i wiggle the shifter

I need to see where the nss wires come from and go to. The guy I bought my truck from did not hook it up when he put the 700r in and I don't like that! Is that where the reverse light wire comes from also... Half ass work just burns me up!!!

Re: reverse lights wont stay on unless i wiggle the shifter

The screws should have star washers on them (or something similar) so they can grip reasonably aggressively without being torqued down super tight.

It only has to hold back the internal friction of the switch itself so if you can't wiggle it around by hand it should be fine.

Me too..! Anyone know where the wires would be for my 1967 three on the tree.? I've looked under the dash, under the cab and under the hood but don't see any unused wires or any reverse lamp switch.

Re: reverse lights wont stay on unless i wiggle the shifter

The reverse switch for TotT shifters is on top of the column near the firewall (inside the cab, under the dash). there should be a dark green and light green wire. the dark green brings power from the fuse box (key on) and the light green is the switched wire to the lights on back.

All the tail light wiring (reverse, tail, brake/signals) go through the firewall behind the left head (on a V8) or behind the manifold side of a straight six. There is a plug/socket through the firewall and then that wire harness runs down to the left side frame rail, all the way to the rear cross member, where there's another plug/socket for the harness that goes into the rear of the bed to the lights themselves.

Thank you.!! This was the info I was looking for. I can see the harness as you described and get it now.
