Power steering pump
For the '70 big block, which uses a remote reservoir, LMC wants about $200 for the pump.
Rockauto lists pumps for: "1970 GMC C25/C2500 PICKUP 6.6L 402cid V8 : Steering : Power Steering Pump" Except they're $28 bucks, so can that be right? They show Cardone #20140 or ACDELCO 36P0167 The LARES 2129 is only $27, but has a $75 core

I would say if RockAuto lists it, then go for it. Unless there's something very unique about it. Honestly LMC would be the last place I would look for something like a ps pump. I've bought alot of parts from RA always on with descript. and what they say.

I'm not sure why people buy auto parts available (from any auto parts store) locally, or from rockauto from ripoff places like LMC...
If you are replacing a pump you already have, you can get a bare pump, pop the can off and get out cheaper. The pumps are mostly the same, while the enclosures and peripheral bits varied. I had to do this with a mystery pump that I couldn't match. If you have a press (for the main bushing), rebuild kits are available. |

At $28 I guarantee you it ain't the right one. The big block remote reservoir pump is not available at any of the box stores to my knowledge. $150-200 is what I have found for the correct one that has been rebuilt. 66-68 big block cars use the same pump, but the return nipple location on the back is different IIRC. When you locate one and swap your pulley over, be sure to use the correct tool to remove it. Often times guys use a three jaw puller or beat it off with a hammer, resulting in pulley wobble and belts being thrown after you reinstall it.

although i've never had a problem with r.a they seem too be the best bet out there.
unlike the auto stores where i've had too return return and return parts and even over the phone they cant get it right. r.a theres no verbal commincation(i've never have had too) and they allways seem to get it right. now i would be very leary of a cheap ps pump but perhaps they are cheap cause they dont sell alot of'em. i would say if you cant locate a good original then a rebuild of the one you have (come on YOU can do this) yes led zep said it dont use a 3 jaw puller. then a r.a pump as a last chance.

I've had nothing but good luck with Rock Auto. That said, I know nothing about the differences between the big block pumps and small block pumps other than the remote reservoir is used for big blocks. The Rock Auto catalog shows the same "without reservoir" pumps for big and small blocks. However, they only show pumps both with AND without reservoirs for small blocks. This indicates to me they are aware of a difference. I assume that there is some sort of housing that the big block pump is contained within. If so, is it also possible that the same pump is used for both applications, but the small block pumps are placed in a housing with an attached reservoir vs. a different housing for big blocks? Please educate me.
EDIT: I may have just answered my own question. Classic Industries sells pumps only (no housing or reservoir) for both engines. They do indicate different part numbers, but the same price..$49.99). Last edited by FirstOwner69; 09-01-2014 at 01:40 PM. |

If the high press hose does not fit, simply transfer the old flow valve out of your old pump using the new o-ring on the flow valve that don't fit.
