long trips
Just got back from a 1500 mile round trip with my 1986 3/4 ton truck. Ran great the whole way and actually got decent gas milage. Averaged about 13-15 the whole way. Drove about 65-70 mph most of the time since I didn't have a tach to see how hard I was pushing it. The only hiccup was it burned about 3 quarts of oil on the trip, I just kept checking it and filling it up as I saw it needed it when I stopped. Just wondering how many people take their trucks on long trips and and is 3 quarts a lot for an engine to burn.?

Re: long trips
my 86 c20 i take to my moms witch is 400 one way. norm on the way up i stop at my step dads in nh then the next day go to moms. get 17-21 mpg depending on traffice and speed. oil depends on if the valve covers want to seal for me that day or not lol. last time i went up there stoped at stepdads on the way up did another 400 in upstate maine then the 400 back doing 80 the hole way non stop other then fuel. never missed a bet and i would take her father if i could just need better seats and a cab thats not rusted out and noise as hell lol its on the list

Re: long trips
Years ago I had a 77 C10 rcsb that I had just rebuilt the whole drive train, and added a 35 gallons of gas capacity too. I took it cross country on about a 8000 mile round trip in a month. It went down during the summer, and I think I 2 quarts.
My C20 I just converted to K20 before I got the new motor would burn a quart every 100 miles, and I was using 50 weight. It would chug 20W-50 at about a quart every 30 miles. So your engine could be old, and tired. Or you have bad valve seals. In my case my bores looked like chrome. |

Re: long trips
I had a f@rd pickup once with a 460 and low gears that would use a quart every 100 miles on road trips. No noticeable smoke unless I was backing out of it. We drove it like that for many years even though a set of valve seals would have fixed it. New owners didn't bat an eye....must be a f@rd thing that I don't understand.

Re: long trips
Pretty cool to hear your stories. I paid $1500 for the truck from a friend of mine who has used it as his main hunting rig since about 2000. All I have really done to it since I bought it was put a set of tires on it and adjust the idle to my liking. I think I'll look into the valve seals and the valve covers and see if that helps.

Re: long trips
Mine's been a daily driver for 28 years; 209,000 miles worth.
Longest trip of late was driving it back from Montana when it returned to me. That was about 1700 miles one way. Couple "short" trips to Dayton to pick up tractor stuff. Those were about 550 miles round trip each. Doesn't use any oil between changes but it's a V6 so it may not be a comparable data point for you. K
