Re: Blue 64 Short Bed
Thanks guys!
Rolled the truck into the garage yesterday. Upon closer inspection of the crossmember I decided to do a full crossmember swap. Got the crossmember blasted. And also noticed the front radiator crossmember is bent. I'd like to replace this before removing the suspension crossmember. Does anyone have a straight one laying around? |

Re: Blue 64 Short Bed
I think I have a radiator crossmember I can get for you off my 64 frame. Let me look at it tonight and verify theres no damage.

Re: Blue 64 Short Bed
Pulling the motor to do the crossmember swap and running across a good deal on a pair of heads have made this a good opportunity to put some work into this wet fart of sbc. Today I tore down the motor and confirmed what I had expected. The heads were 76cc with badger .020 destroked pistons, this put the piston .050 in the hole. With a .040 head gasket this gave me a CR of 8.16:1. Comboed with a Edekbrock torker plus cam .488/.488 lift and 292/300 duration with an intake closing at 42 ABDC gives this motor a dynamic compression of 7.5:1........A WHEEZE BAG

Re: Blue 64 Short Bed
After finishing the power steering conversion yesterday I was able to drop the old crossmember and roll it out of the way.
Tonight I wire wheeled the frame where I hadn't been able to because of the crossmember. Then I used machinist die where I would have to modify the frame to bolt up the late model crossmember. Once the dye was dry I slid the late model crossmember in place and fastened it tightly with the 10 bolts that do line up. The blue dye shows the holes which need to be modifyed and allowed me to scrib the needed modifications. Drivers side Passenger side I scribed the upper hole and ended up marking the lowwer hole by threading a bolt from the opposite side till it scribed the dye. I ended up drilling the top holes with the crossmember in place, had I had a transfer punch available I probably would have chose such. Top hole drilled with crossmember in place I then removed the crossmember and used a rotary file to elongate the bottom hole on either side. Upper hole drilled, lowwer hole scribed. Lowwer hole opened up I then marked the angle brackets that bolt on the inside of the frame rail. Surprisingly this required much less clearance, I assume the hole is already oversized. I decided this was a good place to stop for the night. While this was all going on my rusty but free 4 bolt main 350 was stewing. After a few hours |

Re: Blue 64 Short Bed
Tonight I clearanced the right angle brakets and did a final fit of the crossmember to make sure all 14 holes lined up. I haven't seen many pictures of these right angle pieces being used in swaps but I figured since they were on the late model crossmember it wouldn't hurt to use them in the swap.
7 drive side bolts 7 passenger side bolts Then I pulled the crossmember off for hopefully the last time. Next I will finish cleaning the frame and prep it for some paint. Once I had the front crossmember off I found myself radiusing the corners of the angle brackets. Something no one will ever see but I couldn't stand the look of the sharp corners and I will know its there. Left is the sharp corners and right is after radiusing |
